I am wanting to add a roof rack to my 1994 80 series. I would like a rack that will accomodate a roof top tent in the future. The 2 I have been looking at are the ARB roof rack and the Hannibal(South Africa) roof rack. Any one have any experience with either of these racks and or tents?

search roof racks in the 80 series section and you will get oddles of threads.

I like custom made ones. I have a shuttle bus roof rack on my 60. I had to have it cut to size and I used quick and easy gutter mounts.

the ARB is good rack but the sides are not removable so your rooftop tent would have to go way up high over the sides.

The Hannibal is also a very good rack, lighter in weight, removable sides but pretty expensive. A good alternative to the Hannibal would be the African Outback, it also has removable railing, is aluminum and has a bit of a better price here in the US.

This is another alternative that could be interesting:
EQUIPT Expedition Outfitters - Rack Systems

Another one to consider is a board member and sponsor - INTI roof racks. Very sturdy, sides fold down, light mounts up front, RTT fit, etc. Rack is out of Venezuala and build like a brick outhouse. I've had mine a couple of years and love it.

Just bought a Tradesman rack off of a fellow mudder and cut part of the railing to accommodate my RTT.

Tent mounted perfectly.

Turned out very nice, AFAIAC.

Still have about 2.5 feet of storage in back that I can access with my bumper ladder.

I was going to get the INTI form Alvaro but I just could not deal with cutting up a $1200 item for the RTT.

ARB also makes a roof rack version thats made for a RTT. It has half length side walls on it so you can mount the tent properly. I think Kurt @ Cruiseroutfitters sells it.

We run a INTI and never a regret.

You wouldn't have had to cut up the INTI. The rails unlock and fold down, or can be removed altogether.

Sweet rig, by the way.

Thank you.

My problem with the INTI was that I wanted the cargo area to be in the rear and the RTT pushed towards the front so I could access cargo with my bumper ladder. Gary at Mudrak and Alvaro both thought it would take some 'modifications' if it was possible at all.

Personally, I feel it is an awesome rack and the best looking one out there, just did not work for me and what I wanted to do.

very happy with my Tradesman. very sturdy. but big and heavy.

I would not go on a serious exped without a serious rack. the amount of stuff you can put on a full size one is amazing.

I would not get a rack without a sturdy guardrail. too dangerous.

yes, cutting a portion of one side guardrails would be no biggie and one could easily readd a crossbar if needed for cargo if the tent is no longer up there.

Depending on how quickly you need the rack, you could always wait and see what develops at Mule Expedition Equipment (Mule Expedition Equipment - SUV Roof Racks - 4x4 Parts & Accessories - Specialists in Land Cruiser). DMC used one of these on his South America trip and seemed to really like it. I like the fact that the company will custom build one to your liking (to a degree).

If you search through Dave's trip report, I believe he has some detailed pics of the rack.

Thanks for the plug! We are under heavy development right now with our Patented aluminum racks, however if you're in a hurry don't wait for us! But I will say that our rack will be totally different than the pictures Dave has posted, I am in the process of completely re-vamping the website, there will be a few of the 10,000 photos that Dave took in South America on there as well. Watch for the new site, it will be up soon!

Thanks again I appreciate the kind words!

any update on the mule? Could you incorporate some sort of raised front and rear bars for a canoe?
