I did not drop the headliner. My truck has been in NM or AZ all its life and rust was not an issue. I unscrewed what I could. Some of the screws just spun around. Those I drilled the heads off and then lifted the whole rack off.
Knowing that I was going to cover up anything I did to the holes, I just got the channel locks out and started to pull (sometimes in a round and round fashion). Interestingly, the fronts came out real easy with little dippling of the roof, if any.
The rear was another story. That goop they put on the screw and nut combo was also in the padding in the liner. Those pulled out with a hell of a lot more force and made a rise in the sheet metal along with pulling out a ball of liner (very small).
Once I got all of them out, I then took the dremel and smoothed any raised areas by feel and look. Took a little steel wool to the area to smooth it out even more (I think the covering take better to a roughed up area than pure smooth. My guy roughed up the rest when he taped it out.) The Line-X guy said he would cover the holes with some sort of covering (tape?) and the smoother the holes were the better. I used duct tape and it looked real smooth, I figured I was done. Dropped it off in the morning and the Line-X guy did his thing. Picked it up in the afternoon and it looked real nice.
My covering is a little over 1/8" thick and no evidence of holes is even remotely noticable. If the duraback is thinner I don't know what the result will be but I bet not much different. The more time getting it prepped I bet the better result you will have.
If I can wake up I'll go take a picture if you want me too.
