OK. More details...

I have updates about camping options. I'll post here and earlier in the thread (in 'Accommodations' and 'Rough Itinerary' posts) as well.

There are two preferred camping site locations for this event. I plan to pick one as we near based upon the weather/conditions and which gates are open or closed at the time. If the weather is heinous, we will have alternative plans and I will post details here. Chances are we should be able to use either one of these two spots based on the current long term forecast, but I probably just jinxed us all! :)

1. One site is best for tent campers, no RV's, and probably not that kid friendly. Right along the shore of Swampy Lake, sharp volcanic rock around, uneven ground. Great views, picnic table, fire pits, cool spot. No fees at this time of year.

2. The other site is also along the shore of Swampy Lake, but has a buffer so its a short walk from the site. This site has pit toilets and offers mostly level ground and has plenty of space for RV's or tents. Great views. No fees at this time of the year.

Both of the above sites are past Mt Bachelor and nestled amongst the Central Oregon Cascades, about 10 miles from Edison Trail. There will be some driving between trails, but we plan to meet on the Westside of Bend Sunday morning before the run. There will be opportunities for food, gas, water, etc. Sunday morning.

Folks are also welcome to camp/RV in the Edison Sno-Park over the weekend. The lot has plenty of space, has pit toilets, a fire ring at the far end of the lot, and is also free. Pics of the lot and Edison Trailhead.

Post up if you plan to camp with the group and let us know which site sounds better!

I plan to camp from Friday evening through Sunday late afternoon. Folks are welcome to join either day's run or they can hang for the entire weekend.

My general plan is to camp Friday night. Run Edison Saturday. Camp Saturday night. Run the Mellow Run on Sunday. Sunday afternoon, end at Camp and pack up. How about the rest of you?

Carlos,

I'm not exactly sure of the area you taking your trip in, and I won't be able to make it this year, but I want to go there next summer. This area looks bitchen, I bet those lakes would love me and my Fly Rod. We need to plan on this next summer because I want to go.

Right on Josh! We are already planning for 2011, you can count on it!

Cheers, Carlos.

I will be camping at the first spot (tent campsite) mentioned above, along with Mitch, Sue, and anyone else interested in joining us.

Directions to the campsites: Head East on Cascade Lakes Highway headed up to the mountains from the Westside of Bend. You will need to turn left at Swampy Lakes, a couple miles past Mt. Bachelor. It should be about 22 miles from the Westside of Bend. Once you turn left off of the highway, there will be a small sign in front of you. Those with RV's will want to take the right into the campground. Choose any spot! Those who want to meet us at the tent campsite will need to turn left and continue down the road. Travel less than a mile down the gravel road. You will see a sign on your left just before the lake becomes visible through the trees on the right. There will be a simple tent campsite on the left, and two sites on the right when you see the lake. We will be camping on the right side of the road, along the lake shore. There is room for many tents!

Post up if anyone has any questions at all! :)

Good question. Hmmm, probably not. I don't want to rush that important decision. We'll see though. I'll bring it up at our meeting next week and let you know. :)

For those folks running the Sunday run only...

You are welcome to come find us in camp early in the morning or meet us in town. If you meet us in camp, I would think we would have to leave camp Sunday morning by 8:30'ish in order to meet back in town by 9:00 AM.

The meet place in town will be the parking lot of Ray's Food Place, 210 Southwest Century Drive, Bend, Oregon 97702. Plug that into Mapquest for directions. We will meet at 9:00 AM in the West side of the parking lot off of 14th St. There is a McDonalds in the lot/on 14th St. also for reference.

Once the group is together, we will then roll West about 10 miles before we hit dirt for the remainder of the Mellow Run. The run will wind along forest service roads until we finally reach the Broken Top trailhead. Stockers welcome, mellow forest service roads, some mildly exciting wheelin', and some tight sections with trail overgrowth, but only minimal pinstriping. Great views. We will eventually reach the Cascades Lakes Highway, between Mt. Bachelor and Swampy Lakes.

Does that make sense? :)

Hey, guys. I've got a new-to-me stock 100 that I just picked up a couple of weeks ago. My GF and I would probably have to bug out on Saturday night or very early Sunday (she has to work), but if you guys would be up for it we'd love to come by. I am not a wheeler by any means, but I'm not afraid to bang my truck up and learn.

Howdy joelev- You are definitely welcome to come on out and wheel with us on Saturday! We will be running the Edison Trail- mild/moderate wheelin' and lines. Your stock 100 will wheel great and should spank this trail, at least taking the bypasses. There are some tight spots- you may have to make a multi-point turn or two. No big deal. There are some sharp rocks, bumpy spots, downed trees, etc. There are some fun challenging spots to test your skill, etc.

Do you still have step bars installed? You may want to remove them if you like them in one piece. :) There are some spots, especially for longer wheelbase rigs where rockers can smack some rocks. We spot folks through...

Are you planning to camp? Tent or RV? Let me know if you have any questions!

Cheers, Carlos

Sweet! We'll be there on Friday night. Driving down from Portland. Hopefully we'll be able to take off a little early to get there before the sun sets. I'm sure we'll be tent camping.

I've got the running boards on still because I haven't bought any sliders yet. I don't mind dinging up the running boards. I'd rather mess them up than the rocker panels. But it's not a big deal to take them off before I come down. (I've got to get under there and grease everything up this week anyway.)

What do you think? Am I at more or less risk with the running boards on there?

Hmmm. Stock, right?! No lift, stock tire size? With a wagon, you'll most likely have to take certain bypasses. Not because the trail is too difficult, but because its too narrow/tight. You could choose to run the tight sections and you may make it unscathed, or you make take a little damage. Long wheelbase through the tight sections= off camber into lava rock or trees.

Then, the 'bypass' options are still challenging for stockers. :) Lots of small'ish, downed trees. The upper bypasses are straight and hilly, while the tight sections snake around. These upper sections have several small hills that can catch rockers, especially of long wheelbase rigs.

You may be fine with your side steps, depending upon tire size. Or you may want to leave them on to protect the rockers, if you're cool with that. We can spot 'ya through the rough/tight sections, even stack a rock or two if we have to (and then chuck 'em off trail again. :)).

We'll save you a tent site. Do you get the general directions?

COME AWN DOWN! :)

I think we've got the gist. See you guys Friday night!

hey

Just a thought.....if Saturday evening there were a couple of cute ladies with german attire serving brats with saurkraut and german beer while dancing the polka, you could call it ROCTOBERFEST.!!
See you there.
Thanks for making it happen.
