Rocktober Trail Run: October 16-17, 2010!

Join the Central Oregon Cruisers for a weekend of wheelin' and camping.

Basic plan so far is to run Edison on Saturday and then a mellow trail run for Sunday. Edison is a great mild wheeling trail runnable in a stocker, that also has optional lines for more aggressive wheelers. Lots of sharp, volcanic rock, tight turns, logs, etc. Edison will be open and we should be able to run the entire trail or we can run it until we hit snow and turn around.

Current options for the Sunday mellow run would be to travel West from Bend on up to Tumalo Falls (we can even take a quick side trip to the falls for a photo op), then up to the Broken Top Trailhead. There are a couple spots of interest along the way where we can stop for lunch, take a hike, take pics, whatever. There are two gates at either end of this route that may or may not be open at the time due to seasonal snow closures. We will have to wait to see if its open or not on Oct. 16-17, 2010. It all depends upon the snow level at that time.

If this route is closed due to snow, we will have an alternative route to travel on Sunday. I'll figure that out soon...

It may be chilly or even snowy during this event. Come prepared. As far as accommodations go, I will be posting camping options as well as some local hotel and cabin rental options for our out of town guests. More info on that soon...

Please post up and let us know if you're going or if you have any questions at all.

Cheers, Carlos

Great pics and vid!

Awesome, should be fun!

Accommodations

It sounds like folks have different ideas of what type of accommodations they will need for this event. Therefore, I thought I would post up some options/ideas and folks could decide for themselves. Folks can stay in either the Sunriver or Bend area. Sunriver is closer to Edison, but Sunday's run will begin closer to Bend. Here are some links to different accommodations in the area.

Camping:
Depending upon group size and snowpack at the time, we have several camping options available. All options would be located on Forest Service land and we could camp for minimum cost or free of charge. I'll get more details and post here soon...

RV Camping:
Bend: Tumalo State Park: Oregon State Parks and Recreation: Rates Great spot along the Deschutes RIver

Cabins/Houses:
Tons of cabins to choose from in the Sunriver area and a few houses in Bend as well...

Sunriver: Sunriver Oregon Vacation Home Rentals by 411
Sunriver Rentals and Sunriver Real Estate
Discover Sunriver Vacation Rentals

Bend: lavabelles vacation rentals bend oregon Cool folks, great houses
Mt Bachelor Village - Bend Oregon's Premier Resort Destination On the way to the mountains/edge of town, convenient

Hotels/Motels:
Lots to choose from here as well. I tried to provide an array of choices!

Sunriver: Sunriver Oregon Vacation Rentals & Hotels | Sunriver Resort | Golf Resorts & Hotels in Oregon The classic resort with beautiful views

Bend: McMenamins - Old St. Francis School Home Fun place, downtown, brewery, decent food
Downtown Bend Hotels | Phoenix Inn Bend Oregon Hotel Downtown, convenient

If there is enough interest we can share a cabin or campground for the weekend. Post up if that's something you'd be interested in. Or, if everyone does there own thing for lodging, we can always have an optional Saturday Night Brewery Tour! We only have 7-8 breweries in town currently.

Please post up if you have any questions- I'll do my best to answer them

Im all for cheap and camping ;)

Im all for cheap and camping ;)

Me too! I like to camp. It may be cold or wet, but I'm cool with that. I'll be posting several campsite options soon that will be between cheap and free. I imagine some folks will camp the entire weekend (if so, I'll be there too) and some folks may want/need a room. No matter where folks sleep at night, everyone will still be able to meet us each morning for each run. I'll be posting directions to each day's meeting place. This will give folks more flexibility.

The real issue here is the snow pack. Depending upon what's open and closed at that time will determine exactly what our options for camping and wheelin' will be. A bit of a challenge. I was hoping to actually schedule this event earlier in the Fall so we would have optimum wheelin and camping conditions/options. Next year...

We'll make it work! I bet most folks will be arriving in town Friday night. The campers can meet Friday night and the other folks can always meet up Saturday morning. Keep the questions coming!

I agree! I have a couple great camp spots in mind. One for just OHV's the other is perfect for campers/rv's etc. Still depends what's under snow. We may not have any snow. Who knows?!

I saw some decent (technical) wheeling- would a stocker do OK with bypasses?

Nice pics btw!

Stockers?! Sure! :) We've had several stockers on Edison. FJ40's do well due to the short wheelbase, but it would be nice to have a small lift or at least slightly larger tires. Some logs, some rocks, some tight squeezes, and some play areas. There are bypasses and alternate parallel routes. Some spots may require a spotter or a stack, heaven forbid, but all rigs should make it through without any damage or trouble. It does demand your attention at times, especially if you run a stock or near stock rig. Take your time and you'll do fine.

If folks aren't into it, they can be passengers or they we can have a separate sooper mellow run. There is also an 'easy' loop at Edison. We'll be running the 'moderate' loop. Either way, there will be something for everyone.

Went out scouting today for campgrounds/camp spots and alternate wheeling routes for Rocktober's Sunday trail run. Have several options and will post again very soon...

I ended up cruising around on Sunday.

I wanted to get out and explore a few roads that I hadn't driven down before. I headed up towards Broken Top from Tumalo Falls, but ended up cruisin' over to Three Creeks Lake. The weather was cool and rainy at times, very Fall-like. I like cold weather so it was perfect. I have been looking for options for our Sunday run during the Rocktober event. This was a good outing, I found several cool loops, rediscovered an old route, got turned around, etc.

Here are a few pics, including more poser pics of my rig. :)

Carlos,
Great Pic's. Looking forward to getting to and seeing all those places. Where will everyone be meeting Saturday morning for the Edison Trail ?
Will be staying again at the Highlander in La Pine about 28 miles from Edison snow park. Nice room and only $59 including our mutt.

I know you know this now Tom, but for the rest of the folks- We will meet at the Edison Sno-Park at 9:00 AM, Saturday morning, Oct. 16, 2010.

Great to know about that hotel too, by the way. Sounds like a great deal! I'll be posting more camping info real soon! :)
