I haven't really seen anybody do this with their rig, so I'd thought I'd throw this post up as an FYI.

I recently purchased a JVC El Kameleon head unit (which looks great and blends in perfectly with the dash pads, making it very stealthy when it's turned off), that has many different input options -one of which is for a backup camera. I have zero need for a backup camera, but it would be a huge benefit to be able to see what my front tires were on so I installed a cheap wide angle & waterproof camera I picked up on eBay behind the front bumper and wired it into the El Kameleon.

Has anybody else done something similar to this?

Nice. My buddy and I have talked about doing something like that for a long time, just never did it. You'll have to let me know how it works out. I keep looking at one that's at the auto parts store my wife works at and thinking about finally doing it.

Sin City.....

Thats freaking awesome! No more hanging way out the side to look at tire location, which is harder than hell with a five point on. I really like the idea and may adapt it for my crawler.

I tried the camera out during the day and this evening, and the night vision really isn't that bad. The picture is no where near as clear when relying solely on the night vision, but you can still make out the outline of what's under the rig.

As cheap as this camera was, I'm wondering if there is a way to get four of them to mount in front of all of the tires and just flip back and forth between the feeds. The El Kameleon has a "dual zone" function, so at the very least I should be able to watch both my front and rear tires simultaneously.

Gotta love technology!

That's what I was wondering... if I could mount two cameras and use one screen or I would have to have two screens for two cameras mounted under there. This is making me really want to do this after all these years of thinking about it.

Very cool.

Check the 80 and 100 sections. They always have money to burn and come up with some interesting tech. I know there is at least one build where they incorporated a few cameras under the truck with lines to view obstacles and axle/front cross member/ tire placement.

One of our club members has a similar set-up in his FJC. Works very well. He has his mounted under the bumper facing forward and angled down so he can see where he is going when going up a steep incline. As for the night vision, put some rock lights under your rig........problem solved. You're gonna want lights under there if you're wheeling after dark anyway. :D

my 200 has plenty of camera's on it, just wish they had one under the truck too like you guys are talking about, wonder if anyone has used the factory screen and added camera's too it?

Cool!

I recently hooked up my Swan Freestyle camera to my windshield and recorded a recent wheeling run with the Copper State Cruisers in Sedona, AZ. Here is one of the clips which I thought it turned out decent. I love the scenery from 1:50 to 2:25 into the video.

>> July CSC 2013 Sedona run

Was not in my 40 on this trip though...

There is a guy with a very cool camera setup on his FJ cruiser with the copper state cruiser group. Maybe ask around there.
