Hi all,

I have recently brought a RJ70 Bundera (Petrol 22r) and as it has been sitting around for a while doing nothing i would like to give it a full service.

Im also using this as a learning experieance as i havent worked on cars that much. have a basic knowledge but nothing too technical.

So im looking to replace all the filters, not too hard can just get them from repco etc etc however oils. The car is 26 years old with 93xxx kms, its had an easy life.

What oil weight should i be looking at to put in the engine, diffs, gearbox and transfer case?

Spark plus- there are a fairly cheap set of Bosch platinum spark plugs on ebay and also a set of topgun leads. How do these brands compare with say NGK plugs and driverforce/ eagle/ repco leads. Just on this, would i be ok to buy leads and plugs that state they are for the celica, corona, hilux etc etc fitted with the 22r or is there some kind of different rating?

Anything ive missed? what about grease?

thanks in advance

not sure where to post this but heres a link to my rig on another site

I recently did all fluids on my BJ74 at 100 000km. All of them. With the stuff I wasn't sure on I asked my mechanic, who is a friend of mine so he steered me in the right direction. Do you have a trustworthy source of information?

Do you have a grease gun? A pneumatic one would be preferred in case the nipples've not been greased in a while - the grease will be hard to shift. Do every nipple you can find.

As for spark plugs :meh: I got diesel power baby.

Just climb under the thing and spend a good 20 mins looking at everything and understanding how it all works.

Or you could take it into your mechanic and have him do a major 100 000km service including brake adjustment/skimming etc.

It's pretty tidy. My first car/4WD/Landcruiser was a red RJ70, no steer but had A/C same as yours. Man those coils sure were smooooooth. One owner, low miles, unworn in every aspect - same as yours. Still got a soft spot for the little fellas.

I'd suggest you have an experienced mechanically inclined friend help you thru the first time if you do not have much experience yourself working on vehicles. While it might be a nice zen-thing for you to be alone with your RJ, working alongside the company of others can be a great way to learn. Learning solo by trial and error can be a painfully long road ... my 2 cents.

Hi All:

Welcome Strick and congrats on the RJ70! :D

Where do you live? What weight of oil is used in the engine and gearboxes is determined, in part, by the temperature range the vehicle will be operating in.

For where I live in North America, I would use 10W-30 weight engine oil in the 22R. In the gear boxes and diffs 75W-90 weight gear oil.

Ignition parts (spark plugs, etc.) for a Japanese built vehicle should be Japanese, so if not OE Toyota parts, Nippondenso, NGK, etc. brands for a 22R in the RJ70, or in a HiLux pick-up.

For lubrication, use "EP" rated grease.

Good luck!

Alan

Use a well known brand of oil ,10 -40 even 15-50 should be ok.It really depends on local temps.
Any famous brand spark plug will be ok,you wont notice the difference when driving but the more expensive ones should last longer.
You can use any spark from another car if its has the same number code on it.The 22r in other toyotas is the same,it may have some minor tune differences but it wont affect spark plug.

Get yourself a workshop manual ,Gregories are ok.
