Wow... this 91 FJ70 I just purchased has had a very, very hard life. I've never seen someone be able to mostly destroy a toyota in 120K miles, but this asswipe just about succeded. About the only mechanical parts on the truck that seems like they might not need IMMEDIATE attention, are the front diff and the clutch. Nearly everything else is needing work. Anyway, I'm pounding away at it, but wanted to ask about the rear diff in this thing. I looked at the teeth on the ring gear tonight (in the process of replacing the wheel bearings and rear brakes) and saw the horror that is my ring gear. I dunno maybe 30% of the teeth are not badly chipped, the rest are. Question is... I have the front and rear diff out of a 67 FJ40, is there a chance in hell that any of these would have the ring and pinion I need? I'm getting short of hundred dollar bills. :censor: I can hear you all asking why I bought it. Answer: cuz I wanted it and it was the only one in this remote area of the Amazon I call home... things are improving though. So far have done all new brakes, new u joints, new wheel bearings and seals, new shocks, replaced two leafs in each leaf pack, stripped and painted the all leaves, new rubber bushings, complete tune up oil change, restored the wheels and new tires. I think it needs valve seals at least maybe more, and second gear synchro is worn... but that rear diff really pisses me off, mofo obviously didn't keep the diff topped off when he was too lazy or stupid to fix the leaking pinion seal. I hope being a car abuser qualifies one for eternal damnation :hmm:

diff

What ratio is yours? if 4.10 than the FJ40 diff should work, however its old, probably not in great shape, and has weaker coarse spline pinion. I'd rebuild your existing diff, with new or good used gears, all new bearings, etc. We of course stock these items, however if funds are tight and you have a diff in hand with matching ratio, there's not much to loose by swapping it in and running it!

Thanks for the info!... so using my old diff would just be a matter of swapping in the old diff and the old axles into the new housing? The axles are the same except for the spline style and the new bearings I just bought would work with the old axles? IF SO, I recall that my front diff on this 67 is the same as the rear, and though the rear was in good shape making no noise, the front is likely in even better shape due to not having been used much... the front and rear are interchangeable right? I'm thinking if my 70 is a 4:10 swapping in the FRONT diff into the rear housing? If I were in the states I'd happily take you up on the offer of a new or maybe even used ring and pinion, but shipping all the way to South America would take the fun out of it ;) Btw, on the 91 I noticed the front diff is NOT the same as the rear, but a dumpy looking round looking thing, is that a downgrade from the days of the FJ40 and 60? Once again, thank you.

Rear Diff.

Hi
Your diff willbe a 3.7 or a 4.111. The axels may be different lenghts. The diff will fit in the housing. You may have to change the star gears fine or corse spline. The drive flange, redrill to fit late sharft.

Thank's Aussie, ok...sounding good, but please pardon my ignorance, I'm obviously weak on diff science. So...you're saying to swap in the star gears (same as spider gears?)... using the ones from the newer housing or old? Also, I'm not sure what you mean about drill the drive flange, do you mean these?

If so, I promise there is no one close to where I live that can cut splines, why could I not just use parts (drive flanges) from my 91 diff, and only use the actual ring and pinion with new bearings and mix and match the parts? Just basically swap in only my ring and pinion into the newer housing?

Rear Diff.

The star gears [spidergears] are the 4 in the center of the diff. The old diff may have corse spline axels in it and you may have to change the newer ones into the old diff. If they are fine you are laghing. The drive flange is where the tail sharft bolts on to the diff. I think you carnt change these flanges from new to old as the splines are different. To fix it you should be able to drill the old flange to suit the later tail sharft. :hmm:
