Hey Fellas,

Just throwing this request out there. I already ripped off my rear passenger fender flare, and now I'm thinking about taking the rest of the flares off and rhino lining the fenders. I'm also tossing around the idea of rhino lining where the gray is on my two tone paint job.

Is there anyone in the South Puget Sound area that might be willing to give me a hand with this? I've never done body work before, and I have limited experience with mechanical work. But I've very motivated and willing to learn.

As another option, can anyone direct me to a place that can do this if I decide not to do it myself (with some help)?

Below are some pics to get an idea of what I'm working with.

Thanks,
Russ

You can plug the holes with little rubber tabs and then just rhino over them, or you can take the time to weld them up, depends on how much you want to spend...sorry I'm not closer.

There have been several threads on here by people who have done just what you are wanting to do. If you search they shouldn't be hard to find. It seems to be pretty straight forward--I seem to remember more than 1 person who just used a small paint roller and masking tape. A lot of people have used aluminum tape to cover the holes and then painted the lining over the top.

bought a tin of the duplicolor stuff and the roll on kit, had some masking material on hand- easy job but pull the tape while the stuff is wet or plan on some time with a razor

P.O. had done this over the flares- you can see the line where the new meets the old after I pulled them off.

Stopped by the local Line-X shop and was quoted $860 for black and $1300 for color matched. I think I will be better off doing it myself over the summer. On the down side I have emerald green, I just can't imagine what color will look ok in the truck.

That's hilarious. I think if you lived closer we'd probably demolish our trucks before summer was out.

I did Herculiner on my old 91 80. it turned out pretty nice, I think I have a pic in a recent thread on FJC steelies. Just don't rub up against the truck:grinpimp:

The PO of my white 94 did black Rhino or Line-x and that is pretty nice too. You can get different colors of bed liners, I heard that white is 'spensive tho

I'm thinking this is a project I can manage on my own. How do you mask off the curves in the fender, or do you freehand those parts? Is there something out there to help with masking curved sections?

We'd certainly do some harm, that's for sure...now it's a race to get trail protection on...

Sliders
Skid Plate
Rear bumper

geez, it adds up

TBlume, yours turned out really nice, looks good

Do they make white rhino lining?

I think this is a race I'll probably loose. Being in the Army, I don't have a whole lot of money to be throwing around. But I'll eventually get the protection on. Hopefully I'll get it before I do more damage. I also plan to get some lockers soon. I'm thinking sliders should go on before lockers since I'll be getting into much more "hairy" places with lockers.

Being a Freelance Graphic Artist who just lost about 70% of his billable hours from his primary client (National Distribution Aspirations put on hold due to economy) who is getting married in 2 months means not a lot of dough to throw around either. We may be in a dead heat on that one....

But agreed, sliders first. Then getting that ass-dragging spare out from underneath the gas tank to improve departure angle.

Oh, and on masking....take a grease pencil (China Marker...harder density crayon basically) and trace around the fender flare then place blue masking tape on the inside edge of the mark you laid down to get your clean edge....maybe try to temporarily put the one you knocked off back in the same position to trace that one. If you do the tape little by little you should be able to make the turns pretty accurately. once you have the edge/turn defined, then mask with paper and tape to the tape already down to increase your protected area. The thinner/narrower the first strip of tape, the easier it will make the turn with out puckering too much.
(Think slightly wider than pinstriping tape...maybe 1/4 inch or so)

I did mine myself... It was super easy. I used the dupli-color stuff as it was cheap. Some pics below. Also x100 on getting some protection. Check out my passenger side door... yeah that happened right before the sliders were made.

Hey Joker,

Thanks for posting those pics. Looks like you got the same color LC I have. It gives me a good idea of what my truck will look like. Only difference is my flares will be gone. I like it.

How's the Aussie locker working for you? How long have you had it? You like it?

Trapper,

Sounds like a tortoise vs tortoise race. Should be exciting. Thanks for the tips on masking the curves. I think I understand what your saying. I really think I'll give the whole rhino lining thing a whirl. I think it give the truck a very unique and rugged look.

Thanks everyone for your tips and suggestions.

I've only had it out twice since it was installed and I love it. It was the best mod I've done so far for under $300 and it's super easy to install. I would highly recommend it.
