just came across a smokin deal on an atlas II 4.3 with the hd outputs. damn, and i just bought the dana 300 low gear set and hd outputs last week.

thinking i'm gonna go the atlas route. :)

i was able to spend a couple of hours on the cruiser today. had my buddy chuckles help me out. got the freshly rebuilt trans painted and mounted to the engine, torque converter and inspection cover installed, painted the firewall to make it a little more presentable. i also installed the stock gm motor mount to transmission inspection cover braces. i want this rig to be functional and mechanically sound, as well as to look as close to a "factory V8" as possible.
i did get a chance to install the engine and trans combo as well. i'll try to do some engine "dress-up" work tomorrow as time allows.

got all the engine manifold dress-up done in the morning (mounted all the sensors, new cap and rotor, dip stick, coil,.....) now i gotta get busy rebuilding the TBI unit and getting the rest of the engine accessories on there.

i also had time to stop by pick-n-pull. it was half price day so i picked up a pair of spare d60 rear axle shafts for $40 and a spare pinion yoke just in case. found a beefy pitman arm on a wagoneer so i scored that as well.

i'll post more pice when i get the engine fully "dressed". hopefuly that'll be later this week. ;)

thrashed the s*** outta mine this weekend....tranny worked awesome, t-case worked awesome, all was good.....did a hard trail day on Thurs, drove 60mph to town, hard trails on Fri and Sat. Only breakage was a DS knuckle and trunion, doing a silly obstacle. Worth the rebuild/repair time, for sure.

glad everything worked out well on your rig woody. your build up thread gave me some good ideas. i especially like your x-member for the trans and the way you set up the trans mount. i'm gonna try to incorporate part of that in my x-member/skidplate setup. i'm waiting for my atlas to show up and then i can finally start doing some fabbin'.


man it's good to finally build one of my own rigs, and doing so by myself. feels really rewarding. i think for the last 5 years i have only helped friends with their buildups, but none of my stuff got done. gotta find more time.............


and then i get to build my "cruggy". already have the mogs sittin in the garage! :D
 
tonite my wife went out to dinner with her best friend from high school, so i snuck off to the garage and got a little bit done.
rebuilt the throttle body and cleaned up the mess from this weekend. here are before and after pics:

Wish my project was going as fast. am still in collecting parts phase, but am getting a little done here and there.

i'm worried that i'm not gonna make it in time cause i'm so anal about everything in this cruiser being either new, rebuilt or at the very least completely inspected. oh well, i guess this way my chances of mechanical failure will be considerably less than if i was just gonna install a bunch of used crap. besides, i don't like installing dirty parts. :rolleyes:

finally got some time to work on it today, so i decided to finish narrowing the dana 60 front . i used a big-ass tube cutter to mark the axle tube where it needed to be cut.

then i cut off the excess tube with my protaband after measuring the housing three times just to make sure i would cut it in the right place. after cutting it, i re-ckecked my measurements only to find out i had cut it too short by 1.5". :mad:






























yeah right! like i was gonna let that happen! :D

now it was time to remove the section of old axle tube from the outer "C". to do this, i cut 4 slots into the tube using a saws-all. then i ground our the back side of the C some to remove any mayterial where the tube was welded to the C. normally, this will allow you to pound out the now 4 individual sections of tube one at a time, but in this case, they came out as one piece.
i know it does'nt look pretty, but the extra chamfer in the C will come in handy when welding it back onto the axle tube.

now it was time to prepp the housing for welding the C back on. FC187 was helping me all day today. i figure since i had never done any type of axle narrowing, it would be a good idea to have somebody with some experience help me out with it. we got the axle tube ready, jigged everything up and got the C back on after heating it in the oven to 500 degs. and slightly sanding down the axle tube.


getting the 2 Cs to be perfectly alligned is very important so as a disclaimer might i suggest you don't try doing this without proper tooling and supervision.


we had to wait for the C and the axle tubing to cool down before tack welding them in place so the welds would'nt crack. while waiiting we fabbed up a driver side spring perch. you can use dodge perches, but i wanted something with a little more beef so we used 1/4 wall square 2.5" tubing. also, the perch needs to be pretty tall to match the one on the diff housing.
got the perch done, tacked on the C and went to don's place to use his 220 welder to burn the C on permanently.

at don's we pre heated the housing so the welds would get better penetration and to reduce any chances of the welds cracking. burned on the C, put the housing in his SOA jig to get the perches parallel and burned the driver side perch on as well. put the housing back on some stands with a propane space heater near it so it could slowly cool down for maximum strength.
we also ground 2 small reliefs on the outside of the axle tube before putting the C back on so we could weld a couple of smaller sections on the inside of the C when the housing was put back together. just to make dam sure this front end would be as stron and reliable as possible.
