Sorry guys and gals, it's not anything salacious. It's the sound my 62 Cruiser's tranny makes. (Reverse banging tranny?...eh-hem.)

Tranny is seemingly fine, but when I put it in reverse it's not a smooth transition. It hesitates for a split second then really bangs in hard. The fluid was a little low, but it does it when it's topped off perfectly as well.

Is this normal, or something that needs some attention?

Well I'm not sure what this means, but as long as it's normal and I can get another 50k, or however long until I get a H55F, then I'm not going to worry about it. Just making sure I'm not in danger of leaving my tranny on the pavement, because sometimes when it bangs in it feels like it could come unbolted.

It is normal, but should be fixed before it leaves you stranded. And if you do a McNamara gear, you won't have to worry about it, and you can use it with the H55 transmission as well. The McNamara gear resides in the transfercase and rides on the transmission output shaft.

I'd fix it (I just did mine and very glad I did).

I'm not sold on what you describe is 100% just the sloppy gear on the output shaft. ( I'm stuck on the 'hesitation' before the bang) I'd look into a Rodney flush (search 'Mud). How many miles on the trans? Does the current fluid smell or look burnt?
