my sons 4runner is from Texas and did not come from the factory with heated seats, I had his leather redone last week and the seats had the heat eliment and wires under the stock leather. now that I know the seats are heated I wanted to hook them up. Are the 98 4runners prewired for heated seats or do I need to make my own harnesses? I searched but could not find. FYI it's a 98 Limited 4x4 Looking for location of wires if Prewired. Thanks

That's nice of Toyota. There may not be a loose wire to plug in and it work. I would imagine it'd be bundled with the seatbelt sensor wire somewhere if it was. You need a switch, too. Maybe you could score some switches from a 'U Pull It' yard and investigate where the wires go.

Salvage yards

I have checked a few, I have not seen any 4runners with factory heated seats, must not have been a popular option in Texas, if anyone has factory heated seats I would like to see a picture of the location of the wires. Thanks

I'm betting this was a dealer add on. I have not seen 3rd gens with OEM heated seats. When I bought my 98 Limited, it was not an option.

Maybe so, but the OP said that he didn't know the heaters were there until the seats got reupholstered.

What models from 1998 have heated seats?

I'm not sure what you're trying to say. The OP asked if 4Runners were prewired for heated seats. I said no 4Runners came with heated seats, which means obviously they're not prewired. I could be wrong, though.

Heated seats

I saw some OEM heated seats from a 99 model for sale on EBay a few months ago and if you look in the FAQ thread in this section you can search the FSM wiring diagram and find the one for heated seats but it is just a map not a photo so I can't find it in a real rig.

Maybe what I'm remembering is that 96-98 models didn't come with heated seats. Like I said, I know it wasn't an option on my 98 Limited.

He didn't have it as an option. Only discovered the elements were in the seats when they got redone. Is all.

Are you sure what you saw wasn't the grid for the occupant classification system?

Seats

It could be but I have done some digging into the parts manual and found a heater element but no part numbers for switches or harnesses until I got to a 2001 model. So it appears some did come with heated seats but it's a rare option, I pulled some seat heater switches from a 2000 Lexus ES300 and am going to build my own harness using the FSM as a guide.

Sweet. That should be a nice upgrade... Is the leather in bad shape, or do you Texans just have so much leather to spare?
