I remember hearing back in the day that it's wise to retorque the nuts on the Ubolts holding the leaf springs to the axle. How long should I wait to do that? I plan on driving across the state a couple days after I have the job done, so I want to make sure they're good to go while I'm home.

I did mine after the first 50 miles. Not much change though.

So I guess as soon as I get home after a 300 mile drive would be sufficient huh? :D

I've changed out the u-bolts a couple of times on my 60, as I've fiddled around with different leaf combinations...in all cases I've noticed that the u-bolts loosen somewhat over time. They loosen alot over the first couple hundred miles - maybe 25 ft lbs. Then only 10 ft lbs over the next couple hundred miles. My practice is now to redo them 3 times. The third time is just to check that they haven't loosened up. Since it's so easy to do, why not?

Take the wrench with you.

That's what I do! A little piece of scrap carpet to throw on the ground - 5 mins later I'm rolling again.

I'd say it's worth it to get dirty for retorquing the U-bolts. Five minutes tops.

Can't, it belongs to the auto shop on base. I'll have to just use my dad's when I get home after making the drive. I shouldn't have to worry about anything falling off in the meantime

You will be fine.

U bolts tend to loosen when you wheel, not as much on the road..

Torque before you leave, and when you get home.
