Morning, I need some help with my 91. It starts up, runs, and drives great. Goes anywhere I want to go with no problems, BUT when I turn it off, it won't start again. I used to be able to give it a shot of starter fluid, but now it needs to rest an hour or two before starting again. After the rest, it starts right up. I have read on several threads that 91-92s have this problem, but no real solutions. Any suggestions? THANKS

Hi Michael!

Sounds like a fuel delivery issue to me.

I'd replace the fuel pressure regulator. It's on the fuel rail and pretty easy to replace. Further reading: https://forum.ih8mud.com/threads/3fe-fuel-supply-problem-i-fixed-it.6464/ It could probably be replaced anyways. No part lasts forever. :)

If that doesn't do the trick, then I'd start diagnosis mode before spending more money. Check the fuel pump relay (with voltmeter and Toyota FSM procedure). Check fuel lines for cracks/air leaks. Clean/replace the cold start injector. Pull codes from ECM. Test fuel flow at fittings.

If you are still lurking, next you might try the EFI/Fuel relay. It should be in the fuse box area on the driver side fender. They can be taken apart and cleaned if you are careful.

That is Friday nights project. I read that on another thread, but they just replaced them instead of cleaned.

Changed out the EFI relay this weekend and I THINK that fixed the problem. I ran it for about an hour, and it didn't start the first time after shutting it off, but it started on the second crank. The old relay was hot as fire after running 5 min and one of the posts was black.

On another note for 80s series looking to buy a new relay, a lot of sites have the part on file incorrect. The guys at Auto Zone we able to find it, I think they looked it up under a Lexus vehicle, and get it to me the same day. Anything you can find online the Little Rock store can usually get delivered to the store same day, because everything comes out of Memphis.

Thanks to Josh for all your help. Now that it's running right we can put some money toward that lift kit and tires.

Cruiser running pretty well. I've been driving a lot since the repair. Two gas tanks worth. Auto Zone also sent me a $10 gift card for the inconvenience. Not too shabby.
