In a few years when I want a new ride and because I love the size and durability of my 100 series, problem is they quit making them! They now make a much larger 200 series. The GX460 has the V8, love that and it is pretty much the same size and weight as our beloved 100 series. Anyone have any input on if this GX460 is made as tough, durable and potentially long lasting as our 100 series? Could this be a good way to go for the 100 faithful that want a new rig? Looking for tech info like comparisons of frame, suspension system, etc?

FWIW, the GX 460 elsewhere in the world is a LC Prado 150. Same drivetrain as our 5G4R.

I don't think the GX460 isn't the same size as the 100-series cruiser. The 200 seems MUCH closer in size to the 100 than a GX.

I have a 4th Gen 4Runner (Prado 120 / GX470) and the 2001 LX. The LX is MUCH roomier in length, width, and height. The 4Runner is MUCH sportier and faster as it has a VVTi V8 with 5speed and full-time 4WD all paired up with X-reas suspension in a package that's smaller and lighter than a LC. Only problem is that its smaller and lighter than the LC. :-)

The 150 4R is a nice size, bigger than the 4G4R. Not quite as big, but it's definitely grown over the generations.

We (the collective 'we') had better like the 150s cuz there ain't gonna be enough 200s to go around when we wear our 100s out!

Same size? Huh?

They are within 13 lbs of each other curb weight
They are within 3 inches of each other in length width and wheelbase. So yeah they are nearly the same size.

Agreed looked at all the spec's and they are pretty much the same. What I am wondering is the frame the same size/strength? Is everything tucked up nice like the 100 series for off-road use? Example, when I use to own a 2004 LX470 and a 2004 4runner sport 4.7 V8 I found out that the 5speed in the 4runner had some plastic parts that the LX did not, not good for the long run. Also the 2004 4runner had stuff hanging down unlike the LX. Are the new GX460's made on the same line or plant as the 200's? Would like to think that if the new GX460 is only a couple of inches smaller but weighed only 13 lbs less then the 100 series it "should" be a heavy duty tough rig like the 100 series, but just not as big as the 200 series.

Same size? Huh?

GX460- WB - 109.8 - 100 Series - WB - 112.2
GX460- Length - 189.2 - 100 Series - Length - 192.5
GX460- Width - 74.2. - 100 Series - Width - 76.4
GX460- Height - 72.6 - 100 Series - Height - 72.8
GX460- Curb weight - 5305 - 100 Series - Curb weight - 5390

Pretty close to the same size

When I was posted in Africa I was given a 100 and a Landcruiser Prado (GX460, basically) to drive around. The prado seemed quite a bit more nimble, but that is hardly a fair comparison when you consider our 100 was armored. All I can really do now is compare the memory of driving the prado to the personally owned 100 I have now. We beat the crap out of the prado and it kept coming back for more. It could have had a little more power, but I don't recall ours having a V8 either though.

Ok, maybe that's close enough for you. At 6' 4", an extra 3-4" on the interior makes a huge difference in how cramped a car feels. I admit I haven't been in a 460, but there's no way to compare a 470's interior space to a LC. I don't believe the 460 is bigger by more than an inch in any direction compared to the 470? Anyway, for big guys, the hip and shoulder room difference is VERY noticeable.

Rob, I hear what your saying. Started the thread to determine now the GX460 compared to our 100 series, not now the GX470 compared. Sounds like your a big guy so you might "need" the 200 series? I fit in the GX460 and I'm a body builder 225 lbs wear a size 50 coat but only 5'10". I think we all will be able to figure out real quick if the interior works for our needs. I'm looking for information on the parts we can't see or easily compare to the 100 Series.

Well if you fit you're good! I was close to getting a GX 470 recently, but couldn't make the size work. I also drag a bunch of Boy Scouts around, so the cargo space is nice on the cruiser. The GX 's have things like KDSS, and descent control available that didn't show up on cruisers until the 200. Offset that by a much smaller aftermarket for any serious off road goodies like bumpers and sliders...

Id take a swing door with a mounted spare over the orchestrated sequence it takes to open my hatch any day! :-)

In the harsh areas of the world you will see the Land Cruiser Prado crawling all over the place. It's the slightly smaller brother to the Land Cruiser Wagon. It was originally classified as 'Light Duty' but that only had to do with size, payload and tow capacity, not ability or ruggedness.

I can't imagine that a GX would ever leave you stranded, or not easily last you 20+ years.

I had enough of that with my Discovery. The door hinges fail due to the weight of the spare, especially if anything more than a street tire. You can replace with stronger hinges but then the door frame fails. A losing proposition. Plus, you can't use a swing door as a chair, table, cook site, or work bench.

It was a Disco, what did you expect? :-)

In dry weather the lower hatch is a nice shelf/chair, but in wet the upper doesn't give much cover and I end up not using it. Not that the swing would give any.

I'll take the swing as a first choice, just for the ability to quickly get into the back. Second would be a 4R style full hatch with a roll-down rear window for the pup. The wing windows are nice, just not enough. The split gate is just a LC legacy item.

Not me. I have a 4R and a 100. I've owned a few of each. I'll take the gate design over the full hatch with rolldown window any day. The power rear window is nice in some instances, but the split upper/lower gate design is much more practical than the roll-down window when it comes to real world applications away from cruising to the beach with the windows down. As far as a swing gate - like my Dad's CR-V - No way in hell I'd ever want one.

Mmmm.... :)
