Unfortunately this is going to be one of a my few threads that is NOT photo intensive and that is just because I ran out of time before leaving town and I wasn't thinking about photos at the time. So...sorry :flipoff2:

Here is the deal: 93-94 oxygen sensors from Toyota are now NLA and I'm sure by now the last set have been snapped up. But 95-97 oxygen sensors are still aplenty. In fact I carry the Denso on the site:

After a lengthy conversation with a customer it was decided to have him make the attempt to convert the 95-97 sensors to be used on the 93-94 trucks. For those not familiar, the 95-97 (OBD2) setup is upstream and downstream (inline) whereas 93-94 (OBD1) are left and right banks.

After going thru the EWD for both the 97 and 94 trucks it seems there was a path forward to convert the sensors. Again, my apologies for not having photos. Maybe someone else will add photos after doing this themselves. But simply put the only thing different between the sensors is the wire colors and connector. The physical sensor is the same for up vs down and right vs left. So all that needed to be done was figure out the wiring and swap the connector.

So one by one you remove the old 93-94 sensor, use VERY skinny terminal pin tool to remove the pins from the connector. You will NEED the connector. If your connector is melted or broken...my condolences. Now remove the connector on the new 95-97 sensor (with the pigtail length that matches best) and ALSO remove its connector. Re-pin according to the drawing below and then BE SURE to use the OLD connector on the NEW sensor. Rinse and repeat with the remaining sensor. After more than a month now and a few hundred miles, the truck is running awesome, picked up some increased mpg (don't expect a lot) and no more CEL.

Oh and in case the discussion veers off the rails, both the OBD1 and OBD2 1FZ trucks use narrow band oxygen sensors.

I have the O2 sensors I ordered from you not too long ago just sitting waiting for this write-up. Now I can get them installed and hopefully get the LC back on the road.

I swear I tried to do this before I left up North 😞

No worries brother. If I am ever headed up the 5 I will have to stop by and check out the new place.

Nice to know, but I'm one of those guys that snapped up one of the remaining 93-94 O2 sets. :)

:hmm: How about providing the harness side plug part numbers? Then folks can just swap them out and not worry about retaining the old plugs.

Thanks for the info. I’ll use this to turn my 95-97 set into an extra set to keep on the shelf for my 93.

I may have got the last OEM set, as this came to my house on Friday. Still, pretty cool you figured out this mod to keep the 93-94 trucks happy!

But but I must be stupid Denso is not OEM for 94

And Denso sensor with the correct plug for obd1 are available

And the NTK sensors which were the OEM supplier, with correct wiring connectors, I believe are still available as long as you're not needing them to have a Toyota part number label on the package.

@Shoredreamer can you tell the manufacturer of this OEM sensor?

What is the life expectancy of OEM O2 sensors not long ago I got free sensors and replacement work from Toyota?

can someone confirm this option of using '95 O2 sensors in a '93-'94 does in-fact work.
i have read, heard, etc. that the Denso sensors fail quickly and also cause rough idle, running etc. - although i have not yet tried the Denso sensor so this the somewhat hearsay and may not be accurate.
also, the '93-'94 sensor is still available, just damn expensive, $250/ea.

Yes it does work. I ordered the OBD2 sensor from Wits End @NLXTACY and he gave me a link to/how to re-pin the newer O2 sensors using the original plugs.

Ntk is what my 94 stock was, it got new sensors during the recall, and I replaced those in 2017

Each or the set of two? Each-that would be an ouch! I think I'm glad I snapped up a set when I saw the discontinued notice! Hit up Onur as he may still know about a set.
