I read with interest the cutting board insert user paulbgardner has in his build thread for the tailgate.

When I went to the site he sourced the product from they were out of stock and above my budget anyway (asking $229).

I remembered building some speaker mounts on another car using a product called StarBoard and so dropped by my local boat supply house. Picked up some 1/2" thick black StarBoard 16X54 for $84.

The product (from experience) cuts just like wood (excepting that too a fast cut can melt, whereas in wood it burns). I will have to work out the cuts and mounting but I'm willing to do that to get it in black or white (I choose black) and save $145 (plus shipping expenses). I live in a small population area - but close to the ocean - still you might find it even cheaper.

Maybe not the solution for all - mentioning it just as an idea - the boat stores have a lot of product that is made to take reasonably harsh conditions (like excellent stainless bolts/nuts).

Thanks LBridhes, I'm working on a drawer system, and the replacement of panel with a cutting board is on my list. I'll give Starboard a look. Thx

Check out the Kimberly Kakadu we have a Black widow design cost $55

Find a plastics supply company.

Purchase a sheet of 1/4-3/8" hdpe (cutting board stuff). Using the current hardboard-carpet panel, make a pattern. Grab a saber saw and chop it out.

Attach to tail gate.

Done ;)

Use "high density polypropylene" and you won't be disappointed. Will stand up to just about anything. Better than other grades.

Have a sheet on my work bench for the last ten years and it takes a lot of abuse.

Post up what you come up with. This is still on my to-do list. I think the Starboard had the texture I wanted. The regular hdpe looked very slick.

Starboard, Seaboard etc is simply branded textured HDPE sheet- Google textured HDPE sheet (high density polyethylene sheet) and maybe get lucky and buy it locally or for sure mail order.
