After we lost control on gravel and hit a tree (low speed, no one hurt), I went on the hunt for another 100 within our budget, which was not easy. I bought the one we totaled (a 1998 LX470) 9 years ago with 121,000 miles for $10,500. That rig would now cost me well over $30k, which I could not do.

So I had to go higher mileage, but — I just bought this 2002 Land Cruiser for my exact insurance payout from the nicest guy who works for Toyota corporate and has maintained this rig very well. I’m over the ****ing moon. She’s got:
  • Brand new leather throughout the first and second rows and steering wheel
  • Metaltech sliders
  • OME suspension with medium springs
  • Dissent front and rear bumpers with tire swing out and hi lift jack mount
  • Fog lights and camp lights front and rear (need to run wire and add the switch)
  • Super clean, no rust, Oregon-owned through its life
  • BFG KO2s 275/70/r18 and two spares, and two sets of rims (black and silver) so I can run different sets of tires if I want at some point
  • A Transformers autobot sticker
I’m going to give her an oil change and do some touch up on the paint today, but otherwise things are looking pretty solid. DVD on Nav doesn’t work, neither does the cd changer, but oh well.

One thing I need to figure out is a very subtle wumwum sound/vibration that seems to be coming from the front left wheel at speeds of 35+. It may just be the KO2s’, but sounds/feels more to me like a rotor/brake/bearing component sort of thing. Can feel it through the steering wheel a bit, if that makes sense. I jacked the truck up and checked that the wheels spin freely, and they do, so wondering if it maybe needs the bearings repacked. Grease doesn’t seem to be leaking out anywhere. Maybe I’m just used to the plusher/more insulated LX. More testing needed.

Congratulations on your new toy, you are off to a fantastic start, drive it in good health.

When you mention "Insurance Payout", it gives me shivers.
I have a 2002 LX470 with only 76K miles in near mint condition.
I've long wondered what the Insurance company would pay out to me if she was totaled.
What did you get for your 1998 Land Cruiser?

So, it probably depends on your insurance, but ours is State Farm, and they don’t go with KBB — they have a third party run comps for the exact (or within a year) model of your rig within a 500 mile (or so) range of you. My 98 LX had 176k and they initially offered me $12k, and I got them to raise it to $13.5k. And in fact, if you find you still can’t reasonably get what you’re after with the payout, you can go back to insurance and request more based on your evidence. It was a lot more friendly than expected. $13.5k for mine was reasonable, given its pre-accident condition, which was cosmetically good, but not great. I’d say the one I got, while having 25k more miles, is in great shape, so I’m happy.

Wow! Any idea where the previous owner got new seat leather?

I'm looking to pull the trigger but still considering my options.

Anyway, looks like you got a good 100.

He told me, but I can’t recall — if I can find out from him I’ll message you. It was an independent shop in Vancouver, WA, I believe. I think they paid about $1500 for everything. The leather feels different vs stock (more tooth vs smooth) but that may also be because it’s new/unworn.
