HI Guys,

We are based in Ireland and have a full expedition ready Toyota Landcruiser Series 80 (easi-awn tent on roof, fridge, shower,ol man emu springs etc.)which we were planning to go through the USA in this August.

It appears cost-prohibitive to ship in the vehicle and also we would have to strip it back completely, to get through USA customs.

So we are looking to rent an expedition 4 x 4 for our trip- alternatively we can offer our 4 x 4 for a similiar period to be used in Europe.so that someone won't need to ship their vehicle to Europe.we can all save shipping costs!

I have not looked into insurance yet but will do subject to interest

Thanks,

Liam

Welcome Liam. Both of my parents are from Ireland and all of my relatives live there. My cousin and his family came out here last year and rented a RV (recreational vehicle). It worked great for getting them around the country, but it isn't that great for offroad use. I don't know of any places that rent expedition ready 4X4's, but hopefully someone else will be able to help you out with this. If you have any questions about traveling around the states feel free to PM (private message) me. If you are coming through Colorado I could take you out in my 80. I am planning on getting back to Ireland this fall to see the relatives. Cheers, Kevin O'Reilly

How about shipping to Canada or Mexico? Or is it the shipping rates killing ya. You may still have to take it out of the USA if you enter the USA, but then there is the whole of Middle and South America to sell it in when you've used it up.:D Yeah, our import rules for vehicles suck!!!:mad::mad: But there is more than one way to skin a cat.

Edit: I want a moden smaller sized UNIMOG and can justify it for the farm, but I can't justify it if I can't drive it on the roads.

rental cultures are country specific IMO. Easy to rent exped 4x4s in So Africa, for example. Not so easy in the US I think. OTOH, very easy to find equipped RVs (that's a motorhome, a big van with kitchen etc) in the US. Also easy to rent Jeeps etc in some specific locales (e.g. Moab, HI etc for local use) but again probably not equipped.

I didn't think that it was particularly difficult to bring in an equipped 4x4 (to use, not to import permanently).

The rental / exchange idea is not bad except that in practice, a truck well-maintained by a fanatic like most of us here is not as likely to be readily loaned out because of extreme retention psychology :). So you may find yourself borrowing a truck that somebody just doesn't care much about, i.e. not very reliable.

But good luck, I hope it works out. If you do the trip, post up your itinerary and you'll find plenty of folks to host you and take you wheeling, so even if you are in an RV you'll see plenty of trails (in fact probably better than if you were on your own).

You could also consider buying and selling something here but I doubt you'd come out ahead $$wise over shipping yours.

Good thing is that with the Euro or pound or whatever you are using, you'll find everything 1/2 the price of in Europe, dammit.... :frown:

What do you consider prohibitive as far as shipping? I would imagine you should be able to get it across the atlantic for $1500-$2000. Maybe your shipping agent is giving you high price quotes? As far as customs... ship into Canada if the US is a problem. If it's 15 years old or more you might even be able to physically IMPORT it with minimal effort, and have no trouble driving through the states at all with a Canadian registered truck. I think that's a little unnecessary though.

You can rent a 4x4 pick up truck with a camper in the box here in Canada. Not the most extreme 4x4 vehicle, but more than enough to travel the county or continent, and quite comfortable too. You wouldnt have any trouble getting that across the boarder into the states. Be cheaper than shipping your truck both ways.
