Hey Guys,

Looks like I may have on old Porsche heading my way that is complete, but also completely disassembled. Needs a little welding, paint, and complete assembly. I live in a townhouse and don't have the space to work on it but would have a hard time passing this one up.

Does anyone know if it is possible to rent a space long-term for such a project?

It was/is common practice in my neighborhood for hot rodders and weekend wrench spinners who didn't have a garage to rent a 10' x 20' storage space and use it as garage. At one point the rental place behind my old house had 6 out of 12 units filled with automotive projects and several of those cars were worked on daily.
That may not be enough space to reassemble an entire car but it's worth looking into.

911, 912, 914, 356, ... What have you got?

That may be worth looking into. It crossed my mind, but I just assumed that would be against most storage units rules. I was also thinking that power might be an issue.

Drool. Drool. 356B. Wow. What a sweetheart of a car. Always wanted one of the 356s. Best of luck. Keep us apprised of your progress, please.

Check in Manassas on Signal Hill Rd down from Fairview Market, there's some old storage buildings that I had seen guys roll cars out of on the weekends and work on them. It's been a few years back but it may be worth checking into.
The other thing is check with Timmy at Convenience he may know of a place.

There is a place near Edsal Rd. in Alex where a bunch of guys have rented a warehouse and work on cars. It's HUGE. Lots of stuff, shared big equipment and space for your own tools. PM me and I'll try to come up with more info.

I had a 65 356C and my father in law had two of them. My wife's uncle has a MINT 59 Speedster that he's been offered $150K for. Cool cars. You need to meet my friends Lewis at Karrissorie in Fairfax and Doug Dutton at Porschteration in Calverton VA. Both are metal work artists. It's not uncommon to be at their shop and see a car with over $100K into the restoration. These cars have become very valuable. I sold mine for three times what I paid for it. I sold my father in laws for almost twice what he paid for it.

At some point I will host another welding tech day, but I need to get through some project first.

Have fun with it!

Thanks Tom. GREAT idea 'cause it's close. If it's not close, I won't get it done.

Yeah, they are cool as cool gets (except Cruisers of course). My Dad has 65 356C, which he is actually prepping for sale if anyone is interested -- beautiful car. He was the president of the local PCA back in the 60s when he raced Speedsters at Marlboro. Really neat time to be into cars. Doug Dutton is a good friend of the family who lives not far from me. I'm hoping to coax him into a paint job. :p

Doug is a great painter, I love his workshop.

IIRC it's $7500 "street price" to get a car painted by him, and that includes no prep work!!!! Good guy to know.

I lifted my 80 here..

Do It Yourself Mechanics

As far as I know they work only on an hourly basis but I did not inquire about anything long term. I would at least give them a call... the guy I spoke with was real cool. He may know of a place.

This looks like an excellent option, but it is a bit expensive for me. I was checking out some of the storage units and you can get one for a month for a little over what these guys want for a day. Would be nice to have a lift though.

most of the storage places even offer the first month free... or for a buck or something. Man, Ive always wanted an old porsche. Almost bought a 71 911 when I was 17. Would've been a helluva good investment given current prices. 356s are bad ass too!

I've managed to score a space with a friend of mine, and I do like free. Very gracious of him. Yeah, those old Porsches are sweet. My dream car was a '72 or '73 911S. I won't complain putting around in a 356 though.

Thanks for the help folks. Looks like this project is to going work
