Looks nice. Is it really a 72 or just titled as ? The brake lights are from a newer year and a 72 didn’t have provisions for the roll bar you have in it. Can you share a picture of the frame vin and the vin that’s on the A pillar of the drivers door ? They should match. Wish I had time to take on another project this one looks like fun.
I’m pretty sure the lights changed in late 73 along with the steering column and the gas tank cover. Although I’ve been known to mix up my years. Im guessing this is a 74/ 75. Fyi

As best I was able to tell researching it a while back, it was a '72.5, built around June-July. From what I found, there were a few transitional pieces around that time.
Vin on the title is FJ40131490 which matches the A pillar label and says 1972. The one on the frame is pretty hard to read but looks like it is probably different.
I thought I had read that the 4 speed trans didn't come out until 74 and the doors are off of an earlier model with the six-screw panels.

I’ll make a guess at what occurred since I’ve seen this in states that require smog. I’m guessing that’s a 76 frame and someone swapped out the A pillar Vin so they could register this vehicle in a state like CA. In CA a 76 year vehicle requires smog check before DMV will issue a registration. Folks have been known to break the law and purchase an earlier VIN and swap it out thinking nobody would know or catch it. Having Vins that don’t match create all sorts of legal issues. In CA the frame Vin is the one the vehicle is registered off and I’d guess this also goes for the majority of states.

If you know the back history on this cruiser and it came out of CA a lot of this would make sense. If this was a Nevada cruiser its whole life I have no idea why the VINs wouldn’t match.

Hmm. As far as the history that I know, I purchased it out of Silver Springs, NV in 2017. Prior to that I'm not sure, but the older guy I bought it off of seemed to have had it for quite some time. It was deep in a back yard that was fairly overgrown with sage brush. It came with a clean NV title and I had no problem getting a new one from that.

The older doors I put on, as the ones it came with were pretty beat up along with the fenders.

As these things are often old and cobbled together, I'm sure there's a different process depending on the state to get it appropriately titled. When I get home tonight I'll see if I can get a rubbing of the frame vin to see if that's any more legible.

Attached photo is how it looked when I first picked it up.
