If I was aiming to replace the shocks I'd be more than happy to hold the upper portion in place with a pipe wrench or vice grips, but since all I'm doing is replacing the bushing and these shocks are only two years old, I need a method to hold that upper rod in place without damaging it. They're Doetsch shocks and no dust shields, just a bare metal rod that spins free when I try to get the nut off.

All help appreciated :)

Drill a hole in the floor, according to drawings/measurements in a thread in here somewhere, and use a rattle gun.
Having an extra hole is really no big deal, just block it off with a standard body plug.

If it were my car I'd be fine drilling holes but it's my mom's and she would FREAK. Appreciate the suggestions though.

Use a strap wrench to hold the shock body in place and keep it from spinning. A gearwrench or ratcheting wrench for the top nut and you'll be good.

Not sure a hole would solve your problem. OEM shocks have flats above the threads where you can put an adjustable wrench to keep the shaft from spinning. Does that brand? Fox shocks had a hex wrench fitting at the top of the shaft for the same purpose. You may end up cutting a hole to see... ;) Anyway, some liquid wrench soaking overnight might help while you ponder options

I cut small strip of rubber from a mt bike inner tube. Then used a vice grip, and the rubber strip strip to hold the shaft. Worked great.
