Is there an easy/painless method for removing the thin, purple film from all the windows on an FJ60? Some of the rear windows are starting to peel so those should be easier, in theory :meh:. I want to get it professionally tinted soon so I want to remove the purple film to reduce my cost.

Go by a spray bottle of ammonia, tape off the area with poly and spray it in there. Don't let the ammonia go into the door.

Wear some breathing protection too.

I just did this last month. I am sure brownbear's method works, but if you want a no mess removal, just use heat.

Truck was parked in the garage. I put a small electric heater in the truck a couple of hours before I started to let it get pretty warm in there. Then used a blow drier at the point of attack. A razorblade is helpful in getting a corner started. Then just grab and slowly pull while waving the blow drier just ahead of where your pulling.

I found that if I went slower with the pulling and used plenty of heat, then there was virtually no adhesive residue left on the glass, but if I got hurried pulling on the stuff, it would leave behind some sticky stuff that required a little attention with solvent.

Truck looks so much better without the purple tint. I love the look of the clean glass. The factory glass has nice suttle tint/color to it.

x3 on the heat. My buddy says that using stuff called (oops) it comes in a white spray can can get the adhesive off. I have never seen it but he is good at this kind of stuff.

Cool, thanks for all the info. I'll try the blow dryer method when it gets a little warmer here (hopefully soon!).

how many watts? I needed something a little hotter than a blow dryer last time a tried

My girlfriend doesn't have a blow dryer so I was planning on just getting one but maybe I will just get a low watt heat gun instead. What wattage would you recommend?

well mine goes from 1,000 watts to 5,000. I think I was set around 1,500. Try to get something selectable.....at the very least low and high. Dont hold the gun to long in one spot due to heat. Play with it for a minute to see just what it takes to remove it so you dont crack any glass, but with a lower wattage you should be fine
