The air pump in my 84 FJ60 has stopped working, when I called around to replace it I was told by more than one person that I could eliminate this part because I live in Hawaii and their not required here. Is this true and will it affect my trucks performance ?

Thats what I figured. The part only costs $120.00 tomorrow or $82.00 in 4 to 6 weeks, part of living on Kauai. I hope thats what is wrong, the engine does turn over but I can see the belt move and the wheel on the smog pump seems frozen causing the belt to smoke and the engine to stall. What do you folks think? Thanks for your help.

Those smog pumps are always seizing, or squeeling...
Might be time to lose it.

Sounds like a seized air pump. Pretty common. I've had two fail - both on the way home from skiing. Usually they seize because the PS pump is leaking, and the PS fluid kills the Air Pump bearing. So, check to see if your PS pump is leaking, and make sure to fix that if you replace the Air Pump. The correct fix for a PS pump is to install an OEM pump purchased from Cdan. If I'd done that the first time, I wouldn't have had TWO air pumps fail.

wow! This is great. Thanks every one for your quick and excellent response. I did a search for smog pumps, and learned as Doug G suggested the power steering pump is leaking and the smog pump has frozen. Now should I replace the smog pump or remove it. Let me first say that I just recently have completly become fed up with the awful service I have gotten from every garage on this island they down right rip you off and then they don't even fix the problem or worse break something else so you have to come back. These experiences have caused me to decide to take matters into my own hands and this forum is starting to give me the confidence that I will prevail. the power steering pump was installed by one of these garages and has leaked ever since, I returned three times and they kept saying "ok it's fixed", NOT. I finally gave up and here I am. The p/s pump seems to be leaking from the bottom of the resivor where it attaches to the pump, when I fill it with fluid it leaks out fast but not until I start driving. The p/s pump appears like it would still work If I could get it to stop leaking. I have ordered a repair manual which will be here tomorrow. Is this some thing I can do on my own?

Ditch that pump if you can. I just had yet another air pump
seize. My p/s pump doesn't leak because I replaced THAT
after my first air pump seized. I even bought an air pump with a lifetime
replacement warranty and have since had it failed and put the freebie
replacement on. It lasted for a couple of years but.....like I said
IT seized recently. I could get a free replacement but will NOT
put another air pump back on.
I went with the air pump eliminator thing from SOR. I'm looking
to NOT do this job again and again.
Our 60 is de-smogged anyway and the pump was only there to tension the belt.
