Usually you tap them straight out(down) off the arbor. What type of drill press do you have?

That's what I thought but didn't want to deliver too much force and be wrong. It's a Japanese brand, pretty well built, but can't recall the name offhand as I'm not at home just now.

I've seen some where you had to open the chuck all the way and remove a screw to take off the chuck

I've seen handheld drills like that, but never a drill press. All the ones I've seen were the taper joint. Doesn't mean they don't exist though.

Yep-taper joint, like a tre.

Mine has a slot that you drive a wedge into, which forces the arbor out of the taper.

If you lower the quill all the way down (crank the handle down), you should find a slot. There should have been a wedge shaped piece of steel included with the press. You stick this in the slot and tap it while holding the chuck, it will fall out.

Called a Morse Taper. Every drill press I've ever seen had one. Really large drill bits fit directly into this taper.

Pardon my ignorance cause thats what it is. But I have never had a need to do so, what does one do or what exactly happens to a drill press to cause the need for such an operation?

You damaged the chuck, you need a different size (capacity) chuck, you have taper drill bits, or you purchased a cheaper import drill press and you want to install a good american made Jacobs chuck which drill better holes.

I'm familiar with the process KLF describes and was figuring that's what I'd do to remove the chuck. This one of course ("of course," because it's my drill press) doesn't have the slot in the quill. Now that I bought the bigger drill press I'm just passing on this one to a friend of a friend - cheap. Runs good, chuck doesn't wobble at all. I'll let him find the right chuck key.
