Hi Guys,

Still learning a ton about my ride. Figured out that the fuel filter is a royal pain to change.

Did a search here but no luck locating a mod to make the filter remote.

I'd be interested in see if anyone has done this and I'd like hear how it worked out.

Cheers,

John

Repost of one I machined up from #6 in this thread.

If you get desperate you could have someone (not me) make you something like this. I made it more to be able to plumb in a fuel pressure gauge. It is a duplicate of the stock fuel filter only made out of aluminum and bolts in the stock location. The stock banjo fuel lines bolt up to the ends. Two of the four side ports are to relocate the fuel filter. One of the remaining two can have a fuel pressure gauge connected.

Bill, what are the chances you have the CAD files for these? I could easily make this. Have CNC will travel ;)

Zero chance. Iirc, I just had the stock filter by my CNC mill and took quick measurements from it. I just programmed in the hex and boss etc using the mill's conversational programming. So sorry, no drawings that I can remember. It should be relatively easy though although I did have to weld the pieces together so that would be an extra step. Oh, and I powder coated it since I do that myself instead of sending it out for anodizing.

Seriously? It's cheaper to pay somebody to change it every 50k miles than it would be to make a relocator and then change the filter yourself at that interval.

IMO just fight it in and deal with it every few years. Not worth the complexity. Unless you're photoman that is :)

It's not the ability to change out the fuel filter, even though they should last forever, but its the ability to add a fuel pressure gauge (or a fuel line lock for security). Since I'm going S/C and Supra fuel pump, etc I would really like to know my fuel pressure for future trouble shooting or tuning.

This is a great Job!

Nlxtacy if you make one, I'll pay for your R&D. I'd like to be able to access the filter as I would on any another vehicle I've had where I didn't have to disassemble the engine and I'm thinking SC too one day.

This is Bill's baby. I can't take money for something Bill designed.

Thank you and I must say you are first class. Feel free to use or modify the design and if I can be of any help just let me know.

That would also be an elegant spot to tee in the aux fuel tank and pump system. :D

Well i JUST changed my fuel filter with the engine rebuild so I don't have a spare fuel filter. I need to order one up unless someone wants to send me theirs :flipoff2:

Bill, I'm going to be bugging you soon ;)

I too would be interested....any updates on this project?

GoFast - its not a very difficult job. My last one took about 30 minutes, most of which was gathering tools and modifying the bracket to ease the re-install. In the grand scheme of difficult 80 series maintenance this ones not even on the list. If you want some advice on how to get it done quickly I can PM you or post here.

Can you please post a link or instruction here? Or pm me would work too but figure others will also like to see it.

Thanks

Thread revival! I still haven't changed mine out - other priorities. Half k - post away please and I'm grateful for the offer.

Sorry about this for the 1, 2, 3 people actually interested in this. I still have this on my list of todos. In order for me to move forward on it, all I really need is a stock fuel filter so that I can get it CAD'd. I'm up to my eyeballs in CNCs so getting them made shouldn't be an issue. Its just doing it. :P

Ok folks here is my thinking based totally off the back of PHOTOMAN. Realize that there is more to this than just machining this part. It means having custom hoses being made. Its fine for me since I have a professional hot rod/semi truck hose company right by me. But the hoses would be for me only. Those are NOT the kind of thing I would assume responsibility for :flipoff2:

So this would involve:
1. remove the old fuel filter
2. bolting in new fuel filter manifold
3. finding a new home for the fuel filter
4. having custom fuel hoses made to go from manifold to filter
5. plugging up one hole for future use
6. mounting a fuel pressure gauge in the truck
7. connecting gauge to manifold with a sender
8. amaze your MUD friends

Feedback? BTW, if anyone else wants to do this feel free. I'm at home right now after knee surgery for awhile so there are some things I could take care of.

Ok, here is an easy way to do this job. You will need a set of wobble extensions. If you don't already have them, they are sold in a 4 pack at Sears and you want them anyways because they make a lot of tough jobs easier. You will need another 1-2 extensions depending on length, these can just be straight. With everything assembled on a ratchet it should look like this : https://forum.ih8mud.com/threads/30-minute-fuel-filter-install.545256/

1. Remove DS front wheel
2. Remove splash guard
3. Relieve fuel pressure by opening fuel filler cap
4. Reach in from fender and undo fuel lines with the appropriate wrench ( if I recall its a 17mm flare wrench, found one at the local pawn shop for $1)
5. Attach all 4 wobble extensions together, attach the 2 regular ones together but don't put them on the wobble ones yet.
6. Get under the vehicle and look up, you will see the fuel filter. Start threading the wobble extensions up there, at some point you won't reach, now attach the regular extensions and keep pushing this mess up there. When you have enough room attach your ratchet.
7. It will be difficult to get your socket to land on the bolts. However, you should be able to hold the socket/extension/ratchet concoction into place while simultaneously reaching in through the fender well and guiding the socket onto the bolts.
8. Once your on the bolt, lay back down underneath and start wrenching it loose.
9. The re install is pretty straight forward, just make sure you slot the bracket and install one of the bolts first, before installing the bracket. This is all detailed in another thread that I couldn't find the link to. Maybe somebody here has that link ?

Yeah I've changed it before and it was still a pain in the ass. Like the VSV and any filters, it should be more easily available. Plus I still want the ability to check fuel pump pressure on a whim. I could do something that is temporary but what is the fun in that?

PHOTOMAN/GOFAST, any thoughts?
