Which engine is it that gets the best efficiency, or are they about the same? I have plans to pimp a GS400 but importing a diesel 80 might be the way to go.

Premium is $3.19 and its a glorious day when I hit 10mpg

Nope nope nope nope

The two engines are very similar in power output, the 24 valve has a bit more power top end but, it trades off at the lower rpm, not much in it otherwise.

For me the 12 valve is a little more simple (like me), less fussing around the emissions area etc. The 24 valve is more easier DIY wise when it comes to sorting the valve clearances (every 100,000 miles), the 12 valve uses shims, so a little more 'fiddly'.

My decision was based on the dashboard, which is in the earlier 12 valve version.

In a nutshell, choose your interior, then find the best condition of that model you can.

Excuse me while I eat that idea. The cheapest I could find was 10,000 Australian $, most averaged at 17,000. Maybe I'll just swap a motor.
