Looks like I am relocating to Charlotte sometime in late September from Pennsylvania and just wanted to say hello. I am in the process of selling my home in Pa and will be flying down to NC on home shopping trips in a few weeks. I have been looking through listings and it seems like there are great deals to be had but finding the right neighborhood is much harder.

Let's hear some Mud recommendations....I am open to just over the border in SC.

I'll step up to issue the first welcome. Although I'm in Greensboro (About 90 minutes) there are many folks in the Charlotte area.

Active club with good folks. Maybe not good enough to help you move in but with enough  anything is possible.

Depends on your price range really. The more expensive places are nice. South Park, Providence area, waxhaw, ballantyne....etc. Biggest downfall for them is traffic, anything central charlotte and east charlotte is subject to tons of traffic.

Tega Cay is right across the border in SC and is nice. The University area is nice. MT island lake is nice and has lake plots for relatively cheap on the Gaston county side as well as other plots in a great neighborhood with next to no traffic going for it.

Just north of Charlotte is Huntersville and Mooresville which are also nice. Really though I think you will need to spend some time around each of them.

If you like out of the way places.... then Mt island lake is most likely the best call for you on those ones.

I am also originally from PA, Warrington 30 miles N of Philadelphia. I moved from there to the Fl Keys for 10 years and then to Hendersonville, NC finally finding our small farm here in Chesnee, SC.

I love it here, about an hour south of Char on 85. Take your time, look around for the things you need. Take a look at the tax structure as well in the different counties you are looking at, they differ a great deal. Both my wife and I dislike cities for living, dislike the traffic that goes with them and their near suburbs.

There are many places that are close enough to commerce yet far enough away for you to live a slower paced life, if that is what you seek. Good luck in your search and welcome.

My office is located in the southwest corner of Charlotte, basically right at the 485/77 intersection. The wife wants more of the Carlisle feel, college town and very walkable, and I prefer a bit more freedom (think tire fires and go karts, have 2 boys) based on my experience dealing with local borough BS.

How is Rock Hill and Fort Mill? Please be honest, PM me if it's not forum appropriate.

That's great news! I'll think that you'll find NC / SC is much more favorable to PA and the rest of the northeast :D

There are a ton of guys out around the Triad and around the Triangle, along with the coast. Tons of cruiser heads down here

Ex-PA person here too (Pittsburgh area). I've lived in Fort Mill for the past 13 years. While it's not what I would call a college town feel, its been nice. The downtown area is walkable, and has frequent fairs and events. (search FM strawberry festival, BBQ cook-off, oyster fest, and Art on Main) There is a growing planned community here called Baxter. It is designed to be walkable and family friendly. From where you describe your office, FM would be ideal.

I am told that the schools here are well thought of, but don't have kids. We are far enough out that quads frequent the neighborhood on the way to local trails, and most back yards have fire pits.

Welcome to the land where cars don't rust (as quickly).

Fort Mill is nice..... i'd stay away from Rock Hill (just a personal preference), only thing Rock Hill has going for it is a Del Taco ;)

If you want a college town feel look at Davidson.... not very far at all. Traffic can get a little heavy going that way through Huntersville at rush hour but nothing like trying to get through central or east Charlotte/Ballantyne

Near to your work is Lake Wylie, Steel Creek, both can be nice but not a college town feel.

For your commute going further out to Denver or even Maiden would get you the out of the way feel also. Distance will look far on the map but you have virtually no traffic going that way, so it would be a easy cruise. And with Lake Norman and Mt island lake being that way you wouldn't run out of things to do.

X3 ... on Rock Hill.

Its a west coast thing. Basically just a better taco bell. Nothing amazing bit u miss it when u don't have it.

we got a nice 2800 sqft home inmy neighborhood. 4 bedroom 2 car garage on an acre for 360k....quiet neighborhood.....and a squad of good 7yr old boys sitting on my porch for the wifi
