After having completely restored my 1977 fj45, www.jgoodfellow.photosite.com I attempted to put in the original passenger bench seat (seat restored as well), and it won't fit. The seat in the picture is one I had borrowed until mine was finished. It appears that the Aqualu rear cab is not as deep so the fuel tank sits higher, therefore, the seat is out of whack. Has anyone relocated their fuel tank to the bed or between the frame rails? I was thinking that I could get a plastic fuel cell and install it into one of the checkerplate cargo boxes directly below the headache rack in the bed. I was never too sure about the fuel tank being under the passenger seat anyway. I was also thinking of an aftermarked bench seat, but many are too tall as I always keep the top off.
Any insight would be greatly appreciated. Jason

doing that very thing as we speak. a bj70 tank out back. no space for one in the cab in my 45, new floor welded in that's totally flat.

I had to monkey around a bit to fit it, so it's probably not what you're after, I moved the shock crossmember forward a ways....

Toyota mini trucks had a whole whack of different sized fuel tanks that would probably fit to the left of the driveshaft, in front of the shock tube, but that's where I put my battery/compressor box so didn't work for me...

cheers,
ryan

I have an FJ40 steel aux tank mounted under the bed of my 45. Had to lose the tire carrier to mount it, but it fit nicely between the framerails. Simply welded two L brackets to the front of the tank that lined up with the tire carrier hinge brackets on the shock tube. Welded a lip on the back of the tank that lined up with one of the cross bed supports.

22 gallons of added juice!

Jim Sickles mounted a steel tank in the bed of his 45. Took up a lot of room.:frown: Good part is.........he gave me his stock tank.;)

The more I think about it, I'm thinking of mounting a poly fuel cell between the frame rails under the front of the box. I think with a couple of support straps, it should sit in there nicely. I'm just not sure where to put the fill hole - in the floor of the bed? I don't really want to cut into the side of the box. Any ideas, thanks for the input to date. Jason

well, I'm going to put a late model 40series fuel door in the box side on mine...I figgered it'd be a pain having it in the box ( incase it's full of stuff one day and you need to fill up) plus, you can't use a camper or anything like that.

I'll probably be lazy and lead the filler tube into the wheel well for the time being , until I get around to fitting in the door.

cheers,
ryan

I was thinking of putting a filler in the side of the bed...but my box is aluminum. I like the idea of the filler in the wheel well, I guess until it gets full of dirt. I'm also pondering a small slip tank arrangement secured to the front of the bed. Two months and counting until I put her back on the road again. Better make up my mind. Thanks, Jason

I have been contemplating this for years. I have yet to do anything about it though. Putting a filler in the side of the box about 6" from the front and then put a protecting shield around the tube inside the box is not that invasive. Save the cut outs and it is not a big deal to replace the box to original in the future. Another idea is to have a transfer tube, same size as filler tube, and just fill both tanks from original filler in the cab.

Some pics of my truck in action on the weekend.

I learned a hard lesson from plumbing the aux tank into my 40: you have GOT to mount the filler neck so that the bottom of the filler tube is as high as the top of the tank.

BACKSPLASH!

THis meant that when I mounted the same tank into the 45, under the bed, that the side filler neck had to start up above the floor of the bed. Which meant carefully calculating how much of the bed to cut out to clear a filler cutout that would be partially above the bed and partially below it.

I used an old-school arch-type cutout from a late 60s FJ40. Clearancing the bed for that cutout AND to make sure the filler neck would be removable from the cutout was extremely tedious. Ended up sacrificing a little more of the bed than I would have liked.:frown:

All that said, if I had to do it again, I would do the same.

Got any pics of what this looks like finished?

I am very curious.

Anyone ever used a 60 series tank in the rear of the box between the frame rails? The reason I ask is because I have a good one lying around that is doing nothing which looks like it would fit...just throwing that one out there...

Cheers

Adam

Cheap and easy fix... Go to a junk yard and get a tank from a Jeep Cherokee. It fits PERFECTLY where the spare tire mount was. (You have to take that out first)
I used a filler neck and cap from a boat, but you could use pretty much anything.
The whole thing cost me around $40.00 (20 for the tank, and 20 for miscellaneous hardware.)

Any pictures?

Loose the spare.

My 78 came with a tank mounted up under the bed where the spare tire was. It's 23.5 gallons. It works great. I still have the original under seat tank as well. If you do manage to use two tanks make sure you use the hot with the key on spade off the fuse box for the solenoid. Seems like a no brainer but not to the PO. I had a dead battery after two weeks of it beeing left in the AUX tank position:doh: .

wow, that fits in there very nicely.

The old ConFerr style ones fit in there even better!;)

I was thinking of doing something similar with my FJ45 LWB, but I didn't want to run the filler neck up through the side of the bed. What I thought would be pretty neat was if it were possible to run the filler neck to the back of the truck and use an old 70's style licences plate holder that you flip down to find the filler neck.

Sounds cool, but the rear crossmember is a deal-killer, plus the filler neck would not be high enough.
