Just got back from Xmas vacation to find my '96 80 broken into and about $1500 worth of gear (GPS and CDs) gone. To make matters worse, I had just had a new key made at the Toyota dealership (from the VIN) and the worn out old, but still functional, key was sitting in the center console. (Luckily I had pulled the coil wire before I left) Police believe they "slim jim"ed the door. In any case, there is some %#%#!! running around with a key to my door and ignition so I believe my only option is to re-key the cruiser or replace all the locks. I called the local dealership who referred me to a locksmith who referred me back to the dealership - not much help there. What options do I have. CDan - any idea what a new tumbler set will run?

Thanks,

Rod

cheapest way would be to get a set from a wrecked 80, several have been parted out in the for sale section or try a seack on car-parts or junkyard dog.

Lexus keys have harder to pick inside cut you should be able to swap them in if you get enough parts

You could re-key all the cylinders or purchase a complete set of matched locks. Both options require disassembly of both front doors, tailgate, glove box and ignition lock.

If you do the labor yourself, re-keying the existing locks would probably run somewhere around 20 bucks a cylinder. Once they are taken apart and put back togther they are never quite the same. this is especially true of the igniton key cylinder.

The tailgate cylinder is especially complex and may not be able to be disassembled without destroying it. It has been some time since I have priced a matched set but I imagine it would be around 300 bucks or so. I can check that for you tomorrow.

Hmmm. I hadn't thought about getting a set from a junked 80. Dan - would that simplify swapping the locks (especially the rear you warned about)? I would like to put a keyless entry in as well - is that something that is made easier if I'm messing with the locks or is it completely separate? And yes Dan, please check the price on a set. I also need to get that diverter valve for the front/rear window washer. I'll try to call you in the morning. Thanks!

Rod - if you go with the cylinders from a junked/parts 80, you might want to check with Jeff (don't recall his last name, but he's the one in Davis, CA) on the norcal list. I believe he has an 80 or three laying around...
