Registering an Ausralian Cruiser in CT

I pick up my 40 tomorrow...:clap: (first one) can't wait!!

Does anyone know if an 83 fj40 RHD coming out of Australia will be difficult get registered in Connecticut? I think I'm covered as far as emissions and I will have the title in hand...

Any feedback would be great!

Check the CT DMV website, I think they call this a grey market vehicle. It may need an inspection and I think emissions exemption is 81 or earlier right now. So you may to to go through emissions and inspection, but if it's stock and everything is operational it should be easy.
Keep us posted on how it goes, I was looking at Costa Rican Diesels but costarican cruiser application 2.0 aka unnecessary vehicle 3.1 is not compatible with wife 1.0 and I don't want to crash my system. Good Luck!

I did check the CT DMV website... not too much luck. BUT it does define emissions exemption for 25 years or older. Looks like I'll just make it!

I'll keep you posted.
 
JSaltlick imports a lot of Aussie trucks. I don't know if he has any details about CT though.

You are cutting it a little close with the dates though are't you? I hear they Crush vehicles that are less than 25 years old. :eek:

Post up pics of your new cruiser once you get home.
 
Don't call jsaltlick, he's an a******.

They never check months of production....just the year. The fact that the customs people and EPA at the port have passed it and you'll have stamped customs clearance in hand...they can't do anything. That thing could be on fire and they can't stop you from registering it. It's exempt from everything. Unless you take the DMV guy out to the truck and point out the month it was made, you'll be fine. California is the only emissions state you need to worry about.

Definitely a newbie......just cuz they run perfectly doesn't mean you won't be spending every extra dime on it. Not for repairs but for gadgets and toys. Just wait for the infection to set in........

Probably a good thing you're doing this in 2008, state emissions would have been a nightmare. Not to be nosey, but where is the title from? If someone is titling in another state before selling to you, then just do an out of state registration with VIN verification. :)

I've never done a grey market registration. If you need to, you'll have to go to Wethersfield or Hamden. I'd recommend Hamden. Go down on a slow day and talk to the inspectors and see what they'll be looking for. Most inspectors are very helpful if you're up front, makes things easier for them too. ;)Let them know I really did fix the leaking knuckles on the 25.:D

Yup, they never break, ride like a benz and you won't have to spend a dime on them. Mine was given to me , which is kind of like giving someone a really big bill to pay, haha.
 
You should have a sticker from the importer on the door indicating that the vehicle complies with Federal emissions and safety regulations.

As long as you have that sticker, you should be OK.

Vehicles need to be 25 years or older to be imported unless you are the owner and have been out of the US for 6 months or more.

CT emissions exemption is also 25 years or older.

Sliders and body armor will be needed because you don't want to dent it. Then an OME lift, some new tires, how about a rear "Aussie" locker for your Aussie.

See there goes the money, welcome to the sickness.

Land Cruisers, just like Lays Potato Chips, you can't just have one.

I ordered some new tires (especially after skiing down 13% grade to work today!!!) going for the tall skinny's BFG 33x9.5x15 AT's... believe it or not- Town Fair Tire has beaten TireRack.com... Plus all the bells and whistles of a 'local' (using that loosely) shop doing the work. 5 tires mounted and blanced for $729.00:hillbilly:

Thanks for the advice so far... I'm not exactly registered yet (but figured I'd at least get to work with it today as opposed to the wife's mini cooper (she has comandeered the subaru for the winter and the Harley is not studded)

As soon as I experience the wonderful CT DMV I will be sure to post the result.
 
Go for the "Early American" plates too. Trucks 20 years and older qualify and theres no restrictions on miles driven anymore. That way the town you live in can only tax you on $500 value. Im Marlborough, my taxes were like $9 for the year on my 87 4Runner :D
When I had the FJ25 registered, I took it to Wethersfield and failed miserably. Then I took it to Norwich a few weeks later and had no problem.

It will need to be 25 years old to get it reg'd though. You shouldnt have a problem.
 
It's been awhile I know... but I finally registered the 40 today- piece of cake. Other than the usual smiling faces that you see at the CT DMV:bang:... it really went well... thanks for the advice! I'll see you guys on the trails soon! as soon as I find them...:hillbilly:
