Hi. I got a troopcarrier 75. I has 11 seats.

Do I need to register this as a bus (requiring 6 monthly checks), or can I just register it with as a car?

I tried to take the seats out to register it but everyone said i now need an engineer certificate to register it as it's been 'modified' (seats removed).

Does anyone know the case here?

In WA it doesnt even mention how many seats my troopy has and its "station sedan" CLASS A which I guess is a car. I would have thought the car definition was the same for all states these days.
You would be best off asking the place that does the inspection.
I cant see them asking about engineers certificates for removed seats unless the seat somehow changed the safety requirements of the vehicle.

Says here you would be class 1 which is the same as a car and Class A in WA(I think).

There is also this which to my mind may apply to you. Because a troopy can be bought with a number of seating arrangements from toyota, taking or adding the seats would not be a modification and you would only be adding or removing the components that are designed to be removed. Its the bit where say"IT CONTINUES TO COMPLY WITH THE MANUFACTURERS SPECIFICATIONS, DOES NOT REQUIRE CERTIFICATION"
A vehicle that is modified by incorporating optional components offered by its manufacturer, or
otherwise modified so that it continues to comply with the manufacturer’s specifications, does
not require certification. To check if the modification complies, contact the vehicle
manufacturer to determine the vehicle’s original specifications and/or options.

Modified and non-standard vehicles

But if you lic it with just the front seats it will most likely become a 3 seater. If you or the next owner wants to add OEM seating , it may have to be reinspected. They like to check the nuts and bolts are tight and the seat belts are up to standard. But I doubt they would want an ECS.
but I am no expert on this and its only my interpretation.

If some a****** at a lic centre says it does need a ECS , politely ask under which rule.

Set logic aside when talking about the NSW RMS.

I've been to 6 different mechanics all certified to give blue slips (inspection required for new registrations here) and they've all turned me down SIMPLY beause I am missing the rear bench seats. It's insane.. They're all requesting me to get a engineers certificate, but to prove what? The seats were removed and nobody broke a nail?

New South Wales is F*&#KED.

Anyway, today I went and bought the 4 rear seats for a troopy and have installed them, but the bloke selling them to me said about the whole bus thing needing to be inspected every 6 months. I'll have to confirm with RMS tomorrow.

Thanks Rosco.

BODY AND CHASSIS (continued)

Modification
Examples requiring certification:

(Altering the seating capacity of
a bus from 14 seats to 12 seat)
so its not a bus its a troop carrier so the above rule shouldn't apply.

(Conversion of a panel van into a small bus or a ‘peopl
e mover)
same as above, it came out with the seats from factory & is registered as a troopy not a bus, so you are not converting anything, all you have done is put the seats back as per how it came from the factory so i don't see why you would need to get it pink slipped every 6 months,
I would be asking the RMS if you can remove the seats to make the car more camper friendly, there are plenty of troopie owners that have taken there seats out to set them up for touring & i have never heard of anyone having to have it engineered for doing that,
talk to the RMS i am sure they can give you a clearer answer,
good luck, hope you can get your blueslip sorted & get it on the road soon,
best barnsey

Again, I would politely ask someone from which set of rules they are quoting from.

they wanted my 80 series enginered and ute for removing some of the seats it’s just a load of bull. I took it to my local mechanic passed no problem. Troopys are a light commercial vehicle just like most utes not a bus should register as a car

What state are you in Chappo? According to AUSTROAD rules his troopy is class 1, same as a car, light bus, ute etc.

Nsw yep class one

Im wondering if it keeps coming up on the computer every time you go to an inspection, so they repeat what the other place told you. I have some friends going through this process with a vehicle they bought, the people doing the inspections seem to be bit rigid in their thinking and not very good at explaining themselves.
