hi,

has anyone regeared their 80? chris i think you had it done, did you have someone local do it?

ken, having done your truck and the 62 do you think the 80 would be much different?

i am looking to put 4.88s in as i cant see going smaller than 35s ever, again

Peter:

The e-locker diffs in an 80-series are totally different than in earlier Cruisers. Front is a hi-pinion 8", basically a mirror image of the mini-truck e-locker. Rear is the same size as earlier Cruisers, but the carrier is very different, you set the backlash with shims, not side adjusters.

I have re-geared both 80-series e-locker diffs, I've done several hi-pinon ones (including my own) and I did a rear one for Jason Peters. Pull them out and bring them to me, I'll hook you up.

that is great Ken. is this something we can work on together or do you prefer to just bang em out? i will of course need to pick up seals and gear lube and then find out where i can keep the truck while we do it. can it be done in a day or is that a rediculous amount of work?

It's really kinda of a one-person job, although you're welcome to watch. It takes awhile, though, figure a day per diff, maybe less.

Besides new gears, you will need new pinion seals, stake nuts, crush sleeves, and perhaps new bearings for both diffs.

The rear e-locker is kinda a pain, I would need to set it up with the existing shims, check the B/L, then calculate what new shims to buy, which need to be ordered. I got lucky with Jason's and the first pair I ordered were a perfect fit. The other option is to buy a complete set of shims, so I'm all equipped for next time.

Yes I had someone local do mine. It took them a week to install ARB's and gears. Expensive thought but it was worth it. It looks like you are pretty much hooked up with Ken so that's good.

Pete use Ken's world famous dif cover drop him the rear diff and just drive it around in front wheel drive then switch diffs and drive around in just rear wheel drive. i did it worked out fine.

pffft... wait till he gets MY bill! ;)

The diff cover idea might work, I actually have one that will fit a front e-locker too, made it this past summer:

I don't think I'd drive around a heavy 80-series in just FWD though. That's a lot of load on that smaller driveshaft.

There are some good wrie ups on the internet on how to do this stuff, nat and I have a dial indicator in the mail right now so we can preform some diff surgery on some of our trucks (not to say that you shouldnt fatten kens pockets) but its not an incredibly hard thing to do to regear a diff.

never stare a gift horse in the mouth! fleshco. it is. just need to make an appointment, come to a price and get all the parts, seriously though, can we do it in a long day?

I doubt it. I'm kinda slow at this, take my time. Plus, I will need to order shims for the rear diff.

Give me a call after the holidays, we'll try to work something out.

Don't rush it.

Hey guys, this is something that I've always been interested in seeing done. Any chance I could tag along for it?

Just had some of that UFO raspberry heffawiszen beer last night and boy did that stuff rock! Dono really what nat prefers cuz he doesnt drink that much... so nat what do you prefer?

Have you had Hoegaarden? Some of Belgium's best Weizen Bier. I found a place kind of locally that carries it.

I could never get used to the fruity stuff, Sam Addams makes a Cherry Wheat that my wife likes. I'll check on the UFO next time I'm in that store.
