Ok, now you guys have me thinking, about the cost of fuel. I havent really sat down to run some of the numbers so I might as well do that now
My diesel costs me between $.28-$.30/L and from say 100L of diesel i have 22% left over glycerin 22L
contractors and soap makers buy the glycerin off me for $20/5Gallon pail , I think i could sell it for more, but it seems to be a fair price for a waste product I dont use my self.
SO:hhmm:
Fuel 100L= $30
GLYC 20L=+$20
So at 22% waste product, I think im paying about $8 for 100 L of B100 biodiesel. or 8 cents/Liter. im sure someone will tell me if I figured this out wrong.:hillbilly:
but at least what i cant burn in my fuel tank, i put into my home heating oil, HOWEVER this does show that i do get all my oil for free, and some people are paying $.05/L to buy the wast oil from restraunts, so that would add to the cost. Plus I do have to pick the oil up once a week and then the couple hours time to produce it into fuel. So there are some aditional costs, but I think im still ahead of the game:flipoff2::cheers:
I wouldent go back to pump fuel if it was $.20/L and you would have to PAY me huge to get a gasoline vehicle.

I just got a PM from a member asking about cleaning up of the glycerin and that made me realise that i do recover alot of money in the glycerin, since there is a considerable amount of methanol in the glycerin and I am just not sure how to calculate this. I use 22%methanol combined with KOH (potasium hydroxide) that turns into Methoxide. SO in my 45gallon drum I have a special lid and a heater on the bottom of the drum, I heat the drum up and the methanol evaporates and dribbles into a bucket with lid on, SO if I recover maybe 70% of the methanol and the methanol can be re used, Methanol cost, I think $2.66/L ITs a tough one to sort out the actuall end cost of what the fuel costs me, I do have to admit that its alot more work to recover the Methanol, well to set it up , but after than its 5 min, and it runs its self. but for purely a bean counting standpoint I wonder what my TRUE actaul cost is. Now if I took some of my glycerin and made my own soap, the natural soap place up the road will buy it from me at $1/bar I could make money from making my own fuel, but then I wouldent have time to run my buisness. :hhmm:

Well I currently own 2 gas vehicles and I would like to get a diesel but can not really afford to change vehicles. Considering it would realisticaly cost $1500 to $2000 to buy and install a decent 3B in my cruiser and I put a couple hundred miles on a year, it would take me years to recoup the cost of the transplant by burning free fuel.

You also have to figure out what your time is worth... I know I could make $250+ a day working. If I could make 200L of free fuel a day then it would be close to break even.

If you got a diesel great, make the fuel, drive for free. I will stick to my gas pot but wouldn't turn down a diesel if the opertunity came along.
