I finally figured it was time to get a welder. This thread was great. I got the reconditioned 187 with the 20.00 discount .

I've got 300.00 dollars in Sears gift cards coming so whatever else I need has to come from them.

Any recommendations on helmets, gloves and such for someone who knows nothing.

I picked up helmet (this one http://www.weldersource.com/i5400564.html but got it local) and a bottle and started to burn some stuff up .

I need to dig up some more scrap and booger it together as Im not too good
I think My 1st project is going to be a washer bottle relocater as Im not going to trust anything I weld thats important to keep me alive .
It seems very easy to use and was getting the hang of it after a little bit but ran out of junk to weld together to keep in the groove.
So right now I have a piece of bar stock welded to a sheet of car roof steel to a old drill bit with a washer welded around it .
I'll most likely sell it on ebay for $100k as "art" :grinpimp:

just got mine last night, havent used it yet but did proceed to let go of the wire and let about 10 feet unspool.

Six day turnaround? Nice, I can expect to see one on my doorstep on the 25th then!

do you have to sign for it? I'll be out of town when mine arrives.

Nope. Got mine last week. Quicker turnaround time than I expected. Haven't even opened it yet. I'm ordering an Ultimate Air system that I'll use for the CO2.

Can't wait, I'm tired of looking at the zip ties I'm using to hold my Manafre radiator supports on! :o

Got home late last night so didn't tear into the box till this morning. I found the voltage selector in the bottom of the box. Seems the switch itself is only snapped onto the front cover. Don't know how this all fell apart as pushing on the knob took some pressure, more than enough to hold a loose switch on. Anyway, I couldn't see a mark on the thing. The helmet is coming in next week and I need to get a bottle and some wire to try it out.

the knob on mine was at the bottom of the box as well, slipped it back on, it wasnt damaged.

??

Im about to buy the same model from sears. Im paying $544 after a 20% discount. These are going for 519.99 refurb. I think Id rather go with a new one, Just my .02...

I believe the Hobart Handler 125 is setup for running flux core wire. If you want to be able to mig weld (solid wire with shielding gas), then you'll have to buy a conversion kit. HH 125 + conversion cost may be more than buy a 110v welder that is setup for gas.

Here is a good review of the unit.

If you're planning on buying just one welder and have access to 230v power, I'd get the HH187 as the minimum size. It will do everything the smaller 110v welder will do, but also allow you to weld 1/4" thick. You'll end up spending around $400 - 450 for a basic name brand 110v unit or $510.00 for a HH 187 refurb.

fj40Charles; thanks fo rthe input..........you have kinda confirmed what I have been thinking.......local shop has been pushing the 125EZ and the one knob operation; think I will go with tthe HH187;

I actually got the thing going today and sprayed my first bead. Actually a fellow mudder came by and help me with the basics and I got a job done on the truck I've wanted to do for some time.

I do have a question about the gas. What pressure do you run it at and how do you know if it's too much or not enough?

You want to run it at 15 to 20 CFH (cubic ft./hr). You can always experiment with the flow rate. Turn it down until you get porosity and turn up the flow until it stops. You don't want to have too much flow because you're wasting gas AND you can cause turbulence causing more porosity.

BTW, I have a new HH187 for sale if anyone is interested. $575 delivered to lower 48 states.
