I'm in the market for new batteries. Need 2 for the 24V system. Current ones are 4 o 5 years old and now that its 23below at night they are having trouble starting, even plugged in. I have to run engine every 12 hours, If i leave it for a day and a half they are too cold.

So, what do you recommend for my rig? Cold Canadian Prairie winters. I do some mild wheeling and run a Fridge/inverter and some 12V accessories in the summer. Looking at adding some Fyrlyts too.

Currently running AC Delco around 850CCA.

Shouldnt really matter what brand you get, I ran el cheapo batteries (100Ah) for 5 years in mine and they did just fine even in the cold weather (around -25c was the coldest I started it)... Just make sure theyre from the same batch and otherwise identical too...

Thanks, interesting read. I'm going to price out a pair of Interstates. CT Motomaster Nautilus ring in at $114 each. Nothing in Group 27 at Costco... They got cheap batteries though. There is a guy in town here called The Battery Medic. Hes got remanufactered ones for $60 apiece, I may give that a go, can't really lose even if they only give 2 years use!

Battery trays

Not to hijack this thread, but I'm wanting to add a battery to my 12 volt system. On cold mornings one is a little weak and also just for the added reliability of an extra battery. Has anyone added a battery, and have pics of how/where the tray on a 40 was located?
-Thanks

My .02 on battery brand is I buy El Cheapos from wal-mart. Yeah, they die, but you can take them back. My Ford kills both batteries every winter regardless of the brand, so you might as well get the ones with the 3 year warranty. I've taken back about a dozen.

Provided you can find the receipt. I bought two of them and they were dead in 8 months. No receipt - no return/replacement.

After a few weeks of freezing mine click clicked too after 4 days, but I got it started with a 23 amp 12v wheelchair battery.
Connected jumper cables to alternator side battery, started immediately: funny only 23 amp got it going. Recharged 20 hours with 1 amp and now seems ok, maybe forgot radio...
I have two 100 Amp batteries that are +/-different: (+ - radiator + - is ok) - + is not!
- + 13,6V radiator + - 15,6V after charging
And I would rather switch them every half year or so.

group 27 =l 306 w 173 h 225 == 12 1/16 6 13/16 8 7/8

I bought my batteries at Wal-Mart - Energizer - (the only thing I bought from this big store that kills the local market) ... since there are Wal-Mart all across North America that can honored the warranty.

I also bought my batteries this spring at Wal-Mart, I think they rebranded it to a new name, but same batteries.

very expensive, unreliable in the cold and when paired in 24v systems

Besides being less expensive, simple lead-acid batteries are about 95% recyclable into new batteries.

I respectfully and strenuously disagree.

The batteries are smaller, stronger, more temperature resistant, and MADE IN USA.

Best,

Apologies, I thought you were referring to Optima batteries.

Why do you think Odyssey batteries are better than Canadian made lead acid batteries which give me years of reliable service, sold by CdnTire and are 95% recyclable?

Kirkland group 78 in 900CCA from Costco. These have the terminals down the centerline of the batteries so can be rotated 180° without issue.

The 900CCA figure is very important for cold weather starting. And Costco has a great warranty plan for batteries.

I'd disagree with needing high CCA on a diesel 4x4 24V starting vehicle. With our diesels, you need sustained longer current output on cold start-up (glow and then crank and continued glowing) than the quick burst of high output. At least that is what the guys here at Polar Battery told me. I think my two batteries are each around 670 CCA. A lower CCA battery of the same size will usually have thicker plates and handle the off road vibrations and longer current draws better then the higher CCA which are designed to provide a quick but short burst of power. They also are suppose to better handle the power demands via the batteries from repeated winching.

If you are in the Vancouver area, I recommend Polar battery. They really know their automotive and industrial batteries. They also give Coastal Cruiser club members a considerable discount. Mine were cheaper than what I could have gotten from Costco and are Johnson control batteries.

That's why many are recommending and using marine starting batteries.

Mmmm, yes and ..... no.

Costco honor the warranty as long as you are a member. Good luck if you do not renew your membership and you have problem with your battery.

I swear ... I bought the batteries with my father who is a member ... with MY credit card and when I tried to get a replacement batteries my receipt was not enough... I was not a Costco member. I had to returned with my father.

I then asked what will happened if my father had died, had moved several hour from me, was on a trip around the world or ... if I had the batteries as a gifts.

Nothing would have happened. No membership, no warranty.

Fortunately, they did not have my battery in stock... so, they gave me my money back.

OK, my story included someone else with a membership card, but I realized that the same thing would have happened if I would have bought the battrie as a member who has not renewed its membership.

... racket

If the AC Delcos served you well, go with them again.

I've been running a set in my HZJ77 for a few years with very good success - real world battery testing takes a long time to get done.

I also run the Napa (East Penn / Deka) group 27 batteries in my HJ61 and BJ74 with good success.
