I recently bought my first Land Cruiser; a completely stock 1999 100 series w/ 140k miles. It was a one owner LC and was always serviced on time at the dealership. I'm wondering if I should continue the tradition of having it serviced by the dealer, or if you local PDX enthusiasts have someplace else you like to have your cruisers serviced.

I'm also planning on doing some mods at some point, like a lift and front bumper swap. Still debating on whether I should keep my 16" wheels or go with 18" and each seem to be preferred by different people. I think initially I at least put some 285/75/16's on to fill out the wheel wells a bit more. Anyway, I'd be interested in knowing where you get your mods done as well. I'm not terribly DIY when it comes to mechanical projects unfortunately.

Thanks!

Welcome to the forum!

Although I can't recommend a Land Cruiser shop in your area, I can say that going to an 18 inch wheel greatly reduces your tire options. Not only that but prices jump up stiffly from 16 to 18. Another thing to consider is the slippery slope when going big on tires. Once you go over 33s, you'll start noticing performance drops and then its all about gears, lifts, spacers, UCAs, you name it. I got 33s shortly after purchasing my second 100 and my build would have been much, much less expensive had I stayed there. That said, 35s on 18s looks and rides very good in my opinion.

Welcome to the forum from a fellow 100 series owner down in Eugene. I can't really help with the best dealer or shop to go to in Portland...there are a couple of Portland 100 owners that can chime in. I would encourage you to start small with maintenance things, etc. This forum is an absolute treasure trove of information.

I will echo what pfran42 said...18's are an expensive option, maybe not initially, but they will hit your pocketbook in other ways down the road. They look great and can fit skinny 35 tires and accommodate BBK's, but there are not really any other positives. There are several posts about these pro's and con's of 18's and 16's...

All valid points, however 16's look like A$$ compared to 18's, and don't handle quite as nicely (at least in the 33" size).

I'd highly suggest you give Mark or LT at MetalTech a call. They're down in Newberg. Pretty much the go-to folks in town for LC mods. They're not, however, a repair shop. I do all of my own wrenching so I can't give you much advice there.

You might want to ping the boys over at Cascade Cruisers (or attend a meeting). I'm sure they'd have the 411 on local repair shops.
