I think this is pretty consistent through the model years?

For the LX470 the standard bulb sizes are:
Low beams: H1 (-55W)
High beams: 9005
Fog: H3 (-55W)

For the 100 series the standard bulb sizes are:
Low beams: 9006
High beams: 9005
Fog: 9006

There are slightly brighter halogen bulbs based on specification (2530 and 1870 lumens) called Halogen Infrared Reflective (HIR) (bulb size: 9011 and 9012) that can be swamped for the 9005 and 9006 (1700 vs. 1000 lumens) by filing off the tabs https://store.candlepower.com/mohirbuba.html

My naked eye couldn't quite perceive the difference between the HIR bulbs vs. stock halogen bulbs side by side, but my lux meter did confirm that they are slightly brighter.

I feel the 100 series headlamp has a pretty poor cut-off and doesn't have the benefit of a projector lens for the high beams like in the LX470.

The issue with most LED bulbs is that they usually use 1 or 2 emitters, which aren't able to emit the full 360 degrees like a halogen bulb. Most the LEDs used have a narrower emission angle of 100-120 degrees? The surface area of the LEDs that emit light are also smaller than the halogen bulbs filament, so misalignment with the reflector housing and/or uneven illumination patterns lead to poor quality illumination on the road with a poor cutoff pattern and even hotspots (glare) to on-coming traffic.

That said, the closest I have seen for more even illumination is a 3 sided LED bulb like this:

I only run these in my high beams and returned the matching set for the low beams as they caused too much glare to oncoming traffic. The 3 LEDs in the radial arrangement still have hot spots that don't mesh well with the 100 series's low beam reflector housing. Oh for the LEDs I added a 3"x1" aluminum heat sink to the external LED drivers and have had them 2+ years without issue.

Which LED options did you get? I was looking at a few earlier this year, but didn't find any real life review/experience. Are they really brighter than a good quality halogen?
I got the Stark Apx. Been doing really good so far. They are super bright. Put leds in the taillights and backup lights. Made a world of difference.

They are three sided just like the Star Nill posted above. I just got on Amazon and put in 1999 land cruiser and got tons of options. Changed out all the inside lights also.

Realize this is an older post but I was wondering if technology improvements have developed over the past 2.5 years? I've got both 💯 series vehicles and I think I'd like to brighten things up a little.

Cheers mates,

I am happy with my LED lights in my 2001 LX. Low beams are about 25% brighter and high beams give me about twice the output. I used to run around town with my fog lights on all the time to see. Now I don't use the fog beams unless it is actually foggy.

I used the following:

Philips X-tremeUltinon H1 LED Bulbs for the low beams
GTR Ultra Series 2.0 9005 H1 LED Bulbs for the high beams
Philips 168WLED for parking lights

Lexus LX LED Headlight Bulb Dust Cover Seal Cap to seal out the dirt
