Rebuilding Calipers

Ok on to the next problem.

Noticed while doing the knucle rebuild that I should probably go ahead and rebuild the calipers so it's one less thing to worry about.

Ordered a kit fand brake lines rom Toyota and looked around here for information but didn't have any luck.

I know I should go with the 4Runner upgrade but keeping things as stock as possible for now anyway.

Any tips or tricks I should know about?

I think professionals will tell you just to replace the calipers. At a mechanics billing rate it's not cost effecitve to spend the time rebuilding when remanufactured are pretty cheap. However, if you want to rebuild yourself, the procedure is in the body and chassis manual, which you should have a copy of if you are doing your own maintenace.

I haven't done too many disk brake caliper rebuilds, but I suspect there will be some pitting of the piston and cylinder. The FSM doesn't say how to address this issue (honing, boring and sleeving, etc.). If the cylinders are heavily pitted you may need to buy new ones anyway.

Not cost effective to rebuild calipers anymore. Heck i pay 30 bucks a piece for mine at my local auto junk .....held up for years

Upgrading to 4runner calipers is the way to go. It's not that big of a change from stock to remember to get 4runner pads the next time. It's still Toyota. Just upgraded.

You have everything torn apart. Might as well upgrade to re-man'd 4runner calipers while it's apart. If you bought OEM rebuild parts, you probably paid as much as the cost of the re-man'd calipers.

Unless you're 18 and a really poor college student (speaking from experience here), buy re-mained calipers... IIRC the rebuild kit cost about 25 bucks and it took me several hours with sand paper to get all the rust off the cyls. before I put them back together. Now, saying that, I rebuilt them and they worked great for the next 30K miles until I parted the truck out. However, now that I'm all grown up and have a real job (hah...) I would totally just buy re-mained ones.

P.S. - Do the 4-runner upgrade with T-100 MC

Some of the 80's guys use the rebuild kit, so I gave it a try on my 80. Super easy. No scoring, no sanding required, pistons and cyclinders were nice looking. Replaced the rubber bits, and it went back together quickly. Way cheaper than 80's remans.

Tried the same on my 60, which had a frozen piston. Couldn't get the stuck piston out. Used remans.

If you already have the kit, it's not that big a deal to do the rebuild.

I have done the re build and bought remans, my best advice is what I did last month, I went to a junk yard and got 2 calipers in good opperating shape for 20 each, they work fine, came loaded, you just got to make sure they work,,, but if they dont the 40$ is cheaper than the core, and lately some counter rats have picked out the switcheroo, (someone trying to exchange lc calipers for 4runner calipers)

good luck but while youare there think about changing out the soft lines, they go bad too

Visually inspect your parts at the counter if you go with reman's!!! I picked up a reman'd master cylinder yesterday and didn't really pay attention to it. I got it home, bench bled it and installed it. Couldn't figure out where I was leaking fluid. Turned out they re-used the cracked and broken plastic tube that feeds the front of the MC. (I'll give pics if interested). Needless to say Napa is going to get reamed for this.

Yeah I rebuilded a set on a old Celica back in "the day" so just figured I'd do the same to these. Then again I'm not having trouble so might just wait them out.

I've already replaced the brake lines (man they looked scary).

Replacing that 3rd member might come first!

Forerunner Calipers

Looking into this myself - correct me if I am wrong but most people seem to be running '95 4WD V6 calipers. I am not planning on swapping out my MC (doesn't seem that it is needed) but I am going to replace the soft lines - might as well while I am in there. Hope this helps - if not lots of info using the Search function.

My OEM remans came today from CDan - $75 each plus a $20 core (since I don't have any to return). I got a 95 V6 and they seem like they will work. I also got OEM pads.

However, mine did not come with the "rods" and clip that hold the pads onto the caliper. I don't know if mine were just missing or if you have to order them seperately.

Do the rod's and clips from the Cruiser Cals fit the runner cals, or are they different?

When I did my 4runner calliper swap, I think I paid $75 for a set of remanned loaded calipers. Just took back my old cruiser calipers for core. They won't know. It was so cheap that I didn't have to think twice.

I have looked at Napa, Checker, and Auto Zone and the loaded remans (Bendix and Raybestos) run 80 to 90 per side
