Howdy,
I have searched but am not finding quite what I am looking for.
Is there a mud rebuilding a sm465 thread that I'm not finding?
I know about the one in the tech section. I will be doing this for the 1st time and would like some direction... any help?

Do you have the top cover off yet?:D

I have one that I plan to rebuild, but so far it's future project, probably this winter.

I have heard that if you buy the rebuild kit from Novaks, they send you really nice rebuilding instructions. That's the route I'm going to go.

The factory instructions are also available in the tech section for down load, but they are a little hard to follow.

That is funny Drew...most get tripped up by that cover right away...

In order to remove the top cover of a SM465 the transmission must first be partially shifted into reverse gear.

Not a really difficult transmission to go through. Quality pullers and bearing separators help a lot, as does a good press.

Have fun.

I was thinking about going with Anaheim Gear 150 shipped.

yes I have the top cover off.:hillbilly:.seams the front bearing is vibrating you can feel it when you turn it by hand, you should have heard it at speed:eek:
and I thought they were bullet proof  guess not.

You gave away the secret! The afternoon I brought mine home I spent 2 hours like WTF??? Then I did a search and figured it out in 2 minutes. I have heard of guys prying off the top cover and breaking the reverse shift fork.

It is not a myth; I have fielded many a phone call from people wondering how to remove the cover and wanting to know if I had a reverse shift fork....

If the transmission is operated for any length of time with a junk or missing pilot bearing it will tear up the input bearing for sure, and if ran long enough, can destroy the input shaft where the needle bearings ride and ruin the output shaft as well.

:meh:

once it started making noise I stopped so hopefully..............

oh, there is a pilot bearing in there too, brand new

The pilot bearing should be in the end of the crankshaft. If it's in the transmission, that's a problem you'll need to deal with.:whoops:

It sounds like you're doing the right thing. Anaheim gear has that spacer to eliminate those c-clips on the main shaft, so you should be good. $150 is a good price.

I called and talked to the guy at Novaks, who seemed totally on top of it and was very helpful and cool. They wanted $220 if I remember right. It came with new scintered mainshaft bushings and sounded very complete. I got enough of a good vibe that I'd go back there.

Please post up how it goes with Anaheim gear. It sounds like they know their stuff too.

I've been through three of them:p 1st one was a 2x and it went with the adapter when I went to a 205. The 2nd one had a really bad input bearing and popped out of 3rd gear after a couple years of use. Found it easier to swap in a whole nother 465/205 and sell the one I had.
might consider keeping an eye out for one someone lined up for a project then changed their mind...

pilot bearing?

pilot bearing IS in the crank shaft still:) if it wasnt your right that wouldnt be to great

kinda like a muffler bearing:lol:
or you need the change the air in your tire:D

When was the last time you changed it?

Is it a bushing or a bearing?

X2. Novak's kit comes with pretty good instructions.

Its a bushing

Its a bushing

Make sure the input shaft fits snug into it. You will need to remove the pressure plate and clutch disc in order to do this. If there is any play in the input shaft to the bushing it will damage your new bearings in short order.

so are you saying to remove the bushing and put it on the shaft to make sure of the snug fitting and replace if needed? Its 1 year old bushing..... In thinking about it if the shaft was vibrating then it may not be snug anymore right??
and the best way to remove a bushing is?......

They usually are mangled to get them out. A good (not harbor freight) might work though. If you are really concerned just replace it (check the slip fit on the input shaft tip prior to installation in the end of the crank)
