Has any of you ever rebuilt one of these bad boys? Mine is leaking bad. I though maybe I would just replace the seals. Any thoughts because a reman one is expensive.

I sent mine to West Texas Offroad and had them rebuild it. -JP

I've rebuilt my 87 FJ60 box which should be identical. The ball bearings are irritating, but manageable. Got to be super careful with the new seals.

Gates 349480 is the kit I used.

Ive done several, its not too bad, all Toyota gear boxes are very similar.
just make sure you have a clean area to work, lots of atf to douse parts in and a ring compressor helps with the seals on the piston, where the piston slides by the opening for the shaft will cut the seal combination if you are not careful
count the ball bearing as you take them out and use a little dab of grease to keep the little loop together.
fold the seals into little heart shapes to get them into their recesses then manipulate them with a pick into the grooves.

just did my 85 4runner about 6 months ago. If you need help come by on a weekend and Ill help you do it. pizza and some ginger beer for four is the fee.
