Noticed the other day that one of the contacts that should be soldered to the defroster on the rear window is loose, hanging from the wire instead of soldered to the contact pad on the window. Anyone have this problem? Suggestions to fix? I've done plenty of soldering, just never onto glass(almost) before.

Thanks,
tony

sactocruiser,

The FSM has a section on the rear defogger, and the recommended fix is to apply DuPont paste No. 4817 or equivalent to the broken or detached wire.

It is on page BE-44 in the '96 FSM. I don't have a scanner/copier or I would scan and post the page here.

My girlfriend's 4runner had the same problem. I took the tailgate apart and overhead soldered out of position. Worked great. Funny part is the f-ing dealer told her that it was a bad rear defroster control unit. After a quick call to C-Dan this was resolved and my girlfriend's dealer heard all about it.

BTW Out of position soldering is much easier than out of position welding:)
