I've been through search and found some various part numbers for the little plastic things that make everything open and connect.

It's too cold right now to tear everything apart to get a look at it. I don't want to break interior trim / fasteners, etc.

The upper hatch release was working till I opened it in freezing conditions one morning and then no more.

I got part #69293-89102 as the possible culprit / bandaid fix.

Upper hatch will still open from the inside latch. From the braintrust here - what do you guys figure is broken?

Just thought I would ask to see if anyone else has been through this.

Thanks to all.

I just replaced the little yellow plastic part in the hatch that broke on mine that connects the outside door handle lever to the hatch door release mechanism. Removing the hatch panel to get access is quite easy. For you, open hatch from inside, remove the inside handle over the door lever (2 P2 screws), remove inside door lever trim (1 P2 screw), pop off the hatch panel with taped up screw-driver (or similar), look inside...you should be able see what is wrong easily. Your favorite Mr. T parts vendors here should have the parts you need.

Look for something amiss around this yellow clip.

Have the same problem. Tried to zip tie for temp fix but no joy. How much of a pain is it to fiddle those little parts together ? Where did you get the parts ?, cdan ?

Sam Stewart had the parts for me. Working with the levers and clips in the hatch door mechanism is not bad IMO. The yellow clips just pop in and out. Experiment a bit and you should see how it all functions.

Kinda related....but do you guys know what would cause the latch's locking mechanism to not respond intermittently to lock/unlock signals from either the remote fob or the DD switch?

Sometimes, when the rear hatch is unlocked, and I open it....as I pull on the latch, it feels like something "slips" and i find that the manual lock "nub" is now in the down position.

Trying to sort out if this is an electrical, mechanical or both type of problem.

Thanks.

Yep - went into Toyota yesterday, looked at one and that's the little yellow clip. Part #69293-89102. They will tell you it's not the right part, but it will work.

I'm gonna go ahead and pick one up and wait for the big defrost before I start popping trim.

Thanks guys!

Sean,

I would suggest pulling that hatch panel off and then cycle the lock with the key fob switch. You should be able to see the action of the lock mech. by "playing" with it a bit. My guess is you have a lock lever arm adjustment to make (due wear and tear, etc.) or some friction issue to deal with.

Cheers, Jon

Sean,
The problem with yours is most likely the arm inside the gearbox looking thing. You can remove the trim and panel and then remove that cover with 6 screws. Inside will be an arm that is a press fit over the shaft that actuates the lock mechanism. Where that arm is pressed onto the shaft, you will probably see that it has a crack in it.
I tried a ty-rap on mine, and it worked for a bit, but then it got stiff and failed again. This time, I used some epoxy after cleaning all the pieces real well with electric parts cleaner to remove any grease. It seems like it is going to hold up this time, but time will tell.

Oh yeah, when you remove the 6 screws and the cover, the motor should come out with the cover. There is a gasket or seal around the perimeter you may have to push back into place.

Don't overtighten those screws into the cover, it's only plastic.

Good Luck!

Another item is to ensure your outer latch is well lubed and running smooth, if the handle stays up it will defeat the unlock/lock function.

Anyone got any internet diagrams?
Was just about to take the first trip of the season, now I'm stuck home with this.

Get an FSM for a hell of a price.

(Hint....SEARCH THAT!)
