Highway commuter, somehow smashed a shock. Looking for stock ride, quality shocks, in case anyone has found especially good ones, or ones to avoid. Chicago roads are tough, need a tough truck!

edit: 2021 base Land Cruiser, mostly stock, taller LT tires.

I just replaced my rears with OEM. I’d recommend the same for you.

Edit…..that was a big hit!

Yeah, my commute around Chicago is sometimes crazy, I've hit some big road debris. This must have happened years ago, I've had a weird corkscrew bounce to the truck for years. Kept thinking it was the bigger heavier tires, so glad to figure this out.

I feel dumb for not noticing this before, but moved three times got married and changed jobs since buying this truck, tools and space for DIY pretty limited. Dealers have been doing oil changes, brake changes, an alignment, and nobody noticed this for 100k miles.

Replace with stock shocks 💁‍♂️
Do we have anyone on Mud giving good OEM sales? I'd rather pay someone here, than strangers with potential fake or rebuilt parts.

if you’re in the Chicago area, ping @linuxgod, who may know of a dealer with good parts prices/service.

Also, if you end up wanting to do the front shocks too, I have a set of new in box OEM I’d let go cheap. I feel like I still own you one for your great write up on the 100 timing belt change ;)

Definitely take you up on rear shocks if you have them. My brother @IdahoDoug is thinking I should be able to find takeoffs from someone on Mud. My shocks have 103k on them, still young in Land Cruiser years.

Lots of 80 owners reported improved ride/handling with aftermarket shocks, but haven't heard that on the 100 or 200. I'm always looking for an excuse to upgrade, would throw a set of Bilsteins on if they improved the truck.

I've been looking at new tires, thinking the heavy LT are causing my bad ride. I'd like to stick with tougher LT tires for my brutal commute. Eager to see if shocks fix my ride so I can keep running LT tires.

Also found a screw in a tire, so I'm waiting at Discount Tire. $2k for five Nokian Outpost LT265/70R18. $200 less for the lighter duty version.

I hope the dealerships have not been rotating like the manual recommends

Have you considered Michelin defenders for your tires? For a lighter tire, they’re about as durable as they come.

If you can’t find take-offs the stock shocks are actually pretty affordable from Toyota. MSRP is about $65 per unit, regular discount sites near $45 even without special sales.

I have, those are good tires. I've tried a lot of tires, and read a lot of threads comparing tires. I think actual AT tires are going to be even tougher overall, and more capable if I have to chew through terrain getting off the highway, which has happened a few times already. I see cars with flats every week on my commute Michigan to O'Hare, sometimes a group that all ran over the same thing. I've hit things that rattled my fillings, could not believe these tires didn't change at all.

I ran over an 8' long piece of 3x3" or 4x4" steel angle a couple years ago, pretty sure that is what hit this shock. Car in front of me hit it, and shot it in front of me before limping to the shoulder with multiple flats. I blasted over it with a harsh whack, no time to slow. Those kind of things make me sacrifice ride for ruggedness. And I need excellent winter performance, which no other AT tire seems to come close to these Nokians in slush and snow at highway speeds.

I think my Nokians in P-metric instead of LT would be closer to those Michelins in comfort, but I'll see how the ride is with new shocks and still on these LT tires.
