I have imported a J71 swb from Japan. This vehicle it is a heavy duty utilitarian that is designed to carry up to 500kg. Therefore, the rear seat has been designed thinking more in having more space to accommodate cargo than in passenger’s comfort.

That is why the positioning of the rear seat is very upright as can be seen in the pictures below.

I found in Japanese forums a custom-made metal fitting that tilts and lift the rear seat as can be seen below.

Below there are some pictures of the custom-made metal fitting that I have found in Japanese forums and how they look installed.

Unfortunately, I have not been able to ask for their measurements because you need a Japanese telephone number to be able to register to the forums to ask questions.
I have approached some local companies to manufacture these custom-made brackets for me but they need exact measurements which I do not have.
I have checked the different LC manuals for different models and I have found that my LC have this bracket part

The LC models that have comfortable seats have these bracket part

The solution to my problem could be ordering these parts and swapping them over. However, by close examination of other pictures I think I will be needing other parts.

That is the reason I am reaching out to you guys. If for any chance you have one of these vehicles and your rear seat is the comfortable type I would appreciate if you can share some pictures of the bracket and how it is connected to the seat. This would help me decide if just ordering the parts will solve my problem or if I need to get an extra custom-made part manufactured.

I'm confused what you are trying to do. Are you trying to move it all the way back against the back door? If so, I can definitely help you with this.

Or, are you just trying to tilt it a little better and move it back a little bit? If this is what you want, just use the brackets that FJ posted above.

Hi FJ73 and ATL,

Many thanks for response and your suggestions.

Yes, I would like to tilt it a little better and move it back a little bit as you mention ATL. However, I can’t use the bracket that FJ73 kindly suggested because it is for Land Cruiser 76 and Land Cruiser 70 resale Rear seat. My LC is HZJ71V (2 doors) as the picture below.

The rear seat and brackets are different than the models mentioned above.

If anyone has a 2 door model with a comfortable rear seat I would appreciate if the post a picture of the seat bracket.

Thank you.

Hi Coldtaco,

Thank you. I actually have the part number of the bracket that I believe will give me the comfort and space other models have. However, I think I will need more than just the bracket let me explain.

I think the catch for the two models is the same. The only differences that I can see are the actual bracket, the frame and probably the rear seat cushion support position as can be seen in the picture

The Comfortable type model

As shown in previous picture in my last post. The brackets are different. In this pictures you can see that the shape of the frame is different too and the rear seat cushion support position for the comfortable type is further out in line with the seat-belt anchorage point.

If the bracket and frame are swapped I think the inclination angle of the seat would became like the comfortable type. However, the cushion lock wouldn’t lock the catch. I think this can be solve by adding a custom-made metal fitting like this one
(which would be easier to manufacture).

Any thoughts?

Thank you.

Another option would be to cut out the mounts (front and rear) and move them where you want. I know not exactly remove and replace. Short of buying the mounts you think are for the mounts you think you need, and hope it does what you want, don’t have any more ideas. If you haven’t already done so maybe try and get measurements for the floor mounts on a Canadian BJ70 and compare them to yours, if they are the same then gamble and get the mounts for the Canadian BJ70 and see if that will work.

My bad, I see what you're trying to do now. That seat bracket design is completely different than mine.

I don't have much to add to this conversation other than the fact that you don't need to custom manufacture anything. I bought some squared off U-bolts from McMaster Carr the same diameter. I bolted them through with extra wide, extra thick fender washers on both sides.

My seat clipped right into them, because the diameter was exactly the same. And they were off the shelf.

Hi Coldtaco and Atl,

Many thanks for your suggestions. Unfortunately, I do not have access to a Canadian BJ70 to compare against. That is why I am asking if anyone could post a picture of the brackets.

Atl if you can please upload a picture of your work to have a look at it.

Thank you

Hello,

I am late to the party. Please forgive me if I state the obvious.

JDM 70 Series' rear seat is located some 100 mm (4 in.) forward. Whether this is intended for rear cargo space or something else I am not sure.

I own a 71 Series and I took some pictures of the rear seat. This is the left side.

Hi Juan,

Many thanks this is exactly what I needed.

The only thing I would ask you, if it is not too much bother, is to upload two extra pictures like the ones I have posted below. This will give me the full picture.

Once again to you Juan and to all the different replies and ideas given. They are all very much appreciated.

Have a look at lj71/lj78 rear seats if you get a chance. Way more adjustable and should fit.

This is the type you are referring to?

There are people who have done it as shown in the pictures.

I would like to keep it as close to original as it can be. Also, I wouldn’t like to start looking for a new seat.

Anyway, thank you very much for your suggestion.

I'm not sure about the ones you show. These are the type I meant (pic off web, not mine). They actually can slide back and forth on their rails like the front seats. Also recline independently, or fold up. I do see them come up for sale every now and then.

I bought color/fabric matching HDJ81 seats for front my vehicle. When I install, I'm tempted to put my front bucket seats into the back. Now that would be comfy!

Not to show my ignorance but is there really a way to slide them forward and aft? (I realize they can be folded). 😊

You owned a LJ78 and didn't know this? ;) Haha. Mine is the top EX5 model, and maybe only those had the feature, I don't know.

Anyhow, it's the little black knob/bar in front of each middle row seat. Pull up and you can adjust seat bottom back or forward a couple inches travel.
