Let's see R&R tranny and T-case, clutch, pressure plate and fly wheel. New bolts for flywheel (need too replace if there is very much age on them, especially if you don't know when the cluch was replaced last), my guess without cluch job (which really should be done while your in there if there is any question) $300-$500 possible, add at least another $250.00 +- with new clutch parts. So, it won't be the parts that kills ya', it'll be the labor.. This is just my guess, after doing this on two of my 40's I can understand why.

Don't know many 'Cruiser mechanics in S.A. 'cept for Wimberly 4x4 in New Braunfels, if you were in Austin, I'd say take it to Edwin at Landcruiser Specialist, he's pretty resonable.

Thanks alot thats about what hes quoting me $350 w/o clutch.

I don't see any point in dropping the tranny just to replace a leaky rear main seal. If you plan to drop $350 bucks for labor anyway (get a written quote), buy an AISIN clutch kit and replace the clutch "while you're in there." Labor cost is about the same as replacing the rear main alone, or should be. JMHO

Totally agree. Do the clutch while your there.

I would not recomend giving wimberly 4x4 your business, that guy has been very difficult for me to deal with and I do not believe he really cares about keeping his customers happy, then again I don't have anyone else to recomend.
I would go ahead and do the clutch while your there but make sure you replace the throwout bearing and pilot bearing, they should come with your clutch kit but be sure to check it before getting knee deep and find out they forgot to include your pilot bearing, like me.

Daniel is a little little hard to connect with, but once you do, he's O.K. Thing is, he has the biggest bone yard of Cruisers parts of anyone I know (which ain't a whole lot!). If you can't find something, he may have it. It has been several years since I've stopped by his plpace though. Ask Klingon, he knows Daniel pretty well.

Yes he does have a good amount of worn out cruisers and some very hard to find parts. That doesn't mean he is a good business man, he lacks the social skills to effectively run a business and the only reason he is still in business is because of the rarity of his collection. I was just expressing my opinion, take it or leave it but your rear main job will not require any of his rare parts.

Daniel is an interesting character. I'd save him for the bizarre issues with your cruiser. The rear main and clutch is pretty standard and almost any shop can do it.

Alamo Auto Doctors on 35-North is a good place too. The owner is also ex-toyota employee and knows Land Cruisers.

Thanks everyone for all the great advise not holding anyone to any figure of course just curious any ideas on how much a rear main seal and clutch will run? I have been out to meet the guy wimberly 4x4 he is very rough around the edges but I happen to have an extra breakfast taco with me when I walked in and he had a better disposition after that LOL!

My brother used to live in SA and had a guy west of downtown work on his 60. According to my brother, this guy is very reasonable and did good work on his 60. Guy's name is Pepe and his number is 210-279-3580. Tell him Alberto (my brother) with the brown fj60 said he was a good mechanic... HTH.

Alamo Auto Doctors. He always has Land Cruisers in his shop. There's a nice red 40 getting some love right now.
