I am doing a clutch job on my 1982 FJ60 and I am putting in a new rear main seal and was wondering if there are any secrets to do this. Thanks!!!:wrench:

it can be done without dropping the pan, but be sure to have a friend or two over. i went through the tranny cover with a cherry picker to drop the trans/tcase, but it sucked. the cover doesn't leave a lot of room (unlike 40 or 55 series). cheap insurance, while the trans/xfer are down, replace the seal between em.

should be one piece rubber coated seal...hate rubber coated seals....they're a pita to drive straight...just keep popping out.

btw, the t case nose cone from a 40 works good for a seal driver.:D

Poser has some good pics of dropping the rear main cap to make putting in the seal easier and less likely to damage it.

a two piece seal is like what comes on the older GM 350 engines / rear main. It is made up of two parts...an upper and lower half. Generally they suck. 1 piece rear main is the way to go. GM caught on to this later on.

At least that's what I think the reference is to, in the above.

Yep, I tore down an old 216 Chevy cylinder and it had a two piece. At least it was two identical peices when I removed it. I'm getting my 6-cylinders mixed up. :o Sorry about that. Old Chevy V-8 had them as well. I got too much stuff.

phew...for a minute i thought i was f'd in the head;)

Had a '84 CJ7 with an AMC 4.2L (258) I6 engine. It had a 2 piece rear main seal. It could be replaced by removing the oil pan and the rear main bearing cap only. Of course I know this because it leaked.

i wish my 2f powered cruisers had two piece seals because i really hate having to drop the trans/xfer. yeah, they tend to leak pretty quick, but they are also soooo much easier to deal with (except on my 40, which requires pulling the driveshaft and the entire one piece exhaust to drop the pan:censor:)

Yes I have a pan gasket I bought one when I ordered everything else b/c I figured it would be a good time to do it. Not sure what you mean by FSM though????
