One of the studs on the rear hub that holds the axle flange was sheared off on my truck. Got the cone washer off no prob, and used a cobalt drill bit to drill a hole in the end of the stud. Then my extractor snapped off in the hole  . Now I have a hardened stud with a hardened extractor stuck in it. Any suggestions besides weld something on it? (I don't have a welder... :crybaby: ) I'm assuming I'm ok to drive a few mile like this if I need to go to local shop to get it fixed (it's not my DD).

vise grips worked for me. they were not in there very tight.

Edit, my reading skills need improvement, you don’t have anything to grab onto with vise grips.

a carbide rotary file for a pencil grinder (1/8" shank) will cut the easy out, you will need several, they will last much longer if you can keep them from overheating, take your time and use low pressure, that will only work if it is not to deep in there, usually if you relieve the wide part of the easy off the rest can be extracted.

You may have to use a small drill bit and drill in a few of spots around the extractor and then try and use a sharpe pin punch to loosen the extractor. You may also end up messing the hub up. Patientence is you best friend at this time, go slow and try not to get upset. The stud must be in the hub real good. No chance of using a pin punch to back out the stud? Any how that is the best I can come up with at this time. later robbie

Get a small diamond rotary bit. If you find the right supplier it should only cost about $10 and will last a long time. Use high speed and low pressure for this specific bit.

Never use an extractor for something like that. Drill the hole with a left handed drill bit and it may come out by itself. Guess you learned that part though eh?

If you don't have a welder, save yourself the trouble and take it to a machine shop.

I have some welders and other junk at the shop in down town Mesa, PM me if you want to stop by. Are you going to the meeting tonight?
