Hi All,

I have a HDJ80 Turbo Diesel Landcruiser, was thinking of removing the rear silencer from the exhaust and replacing it with a normal pipe.

Need advise if this would have any harmfull effect on the engine/ back pressure, if anyone has tried this.

It would be similar to a side exit exhaust just longer pipe, I presume it would be louder, but wouldnt want to harm the engine.

you'd be fine with straight pipe only, at worst your turbo will just spool quicker and you might sqeeze couple more km's per liter

Ok Guys, its done, taken of the silencer, so far car is abit louder, quite like the grunt, turbo spooling faster, going to take it on a long run to see if there is any high speed noise/vibrations

The next (and wonderful) step is to do a full 3" exhaust from the turbo back, with a very small muffler. I've done the straight pipe thing, and found that to be a bit loud for my taste, but throw in a free flowing muffler and its great. Better power, better response, and better fuel economy. What could beat that?

Amen! I dont know if its just me but there seems to be more grunt outta the engine now that its full 3" with a single aeroturbine with resonator. It also seems to be quieter out on the highway at higher speeds!

Cheers

Thanks Guys,

Unfortunately we don't have very good exhaust specialists here so cant convert to 3 inch pipe, however so far Im loving the sound which is only louder on acceleration. Cant tell the difference on highway speed and at idle.

I was however wondering how does it better the fuel consumption and why do they factory fit a resonator/silencer/muffler on a turbo diesel, it is just to quieten the sound?

The quicker turbo spooling and sound feels so good, cant help worry if its too good to be true, hope the lack of rear muffler does not cause another problem!

So far so good guys, however going on a trip soon, thinking if its safe to have the muffler off, should I expect any problems?

You should experience no problems. All the muffler/resonator does is cut a bit of sound, so there's not much else it can affect. I ran mine for a year with a straight pipe. No mufflers at all!

If you see a change if your milage, it will probably be an improvement.

Enjoy your trip, don't worry about your exhaust!

Thanks Jason!
