So my troopy's rear little door has always required some extra gumption to close completely and fully engage. i threw in some new oem weatherstripping a while back (perfect fit), and now the little door requires even more force to close. the door frame and doors are all in good shape, no deformities.

anyone else deal with this kind of thing? i'd love to hear any suggestions. thanks in advance...

I just replaced the hinges with new OEM ones on my LJ78. Made a big improvement in ease of opening/closing. They're expensive though!

hinges are old but working nicely. the thing seems to be the actual door not quite fitting into the doorjamb, as if the weatherstripping were too thick and needs to be compressed for the door to close. but everything is oem and no damage to be seen... just weird.

Also... some gumption nets me a door that is almost closed, but if you look closely it’s still not quite there. So I reopen a and give it more effort.

I’ve just chalked this up to 29 years of use and abuse in the Middle East. Things just aren’t as true and square as they used to be I figure.

Mine were like that at one point. I spent a lot of time fiddling with the position of the strikers and rubber stoppers till I got both to close tight with no real effort and also not rattle while driving. This was ages ago but it looks like I put one washer behind each bolt on the lower striker for the small door. They close nicely and are sealed.

Adding heavy dynamat type of sound deadening to the inside of the door and door cards helped a lot too. Seems like most older 70 series have this problem.

great info, thanks. gonna take a looksee right now. i like the dynamat idea, been planning on that when i replace all the interior panels with diamond plate (can't find any abs laminates in my neck of the woods).

I do have a parts list of all the door strikers and latches for the rear doors. It’s on my list of projects at some point to do exactly what you’ve done. I figure it’ll improve some.

Also plan soundproofing.

This sounds promising.

I did much the same thing. All the door hinges and strikers will last longer without the constant friction from out of adjusted bits.
I also smeared rubber grease all over the door seals, it keeps the squeaks down for 12 months+ and the rubber doesnt go brittle or crack.

What rubber grease do you use?

I forget the name , my son got it off one of the sales reps that goes to the parts store he manages. I dont think the brand matters, it all looks and feels the same
I also put it on the windscreen rubber when I replaced the windscreen. It weatherproofs it

This one , its a common bran in Australia
