Hi guys .. I need some help pls.. I just bought 1990 Toyota pick 4x4 ( same face 1990 4runner) but rear differential is missing. My question is 1990 to 1995 4runner are the same rear differential with 1990 Toyota pick 4x4?pls pls pla need some input... Thanks ...

You are correct that all the rear 4x4 chunks from early 80's thru 1995 are all 8" ring third members so you would be safe with any of them size wise. BUT, you need to verify your front gear ratio before you start looking. It will most likely be a 4.10, but they also offered a 4.56 and a few in 4.88 so double check that and then you will know what to look for.

So meaning can I use the rear axle of 1990 to 95 4unner ? Ratio is a problem because I will change to 5:29.

No, you can't (easily) use the entire rear axle from a 4Runner of that vintage. They have coil springs in the rear, whereas you have leaf springs. Well... it can be done but it requires a lot of fabrication.

Like jynx said, the differential will fit no problem, but you need to confirm the ratio of your front differential so they are the same.

Ok ok guys , I just spoke to my cousin he got his 90 4runner but the 3rd member gone. so it is possible used the 91 tO 95 4runner 3rd member but I need tO check the ration.btw any issue on the drive shaft? Thanks thanks

like klf said the 4runner had coils in the rear in the US from 90-95 so that axle will NOT work for your truck if i'm reading right. i really can't understand your above post very well. i think you can use a rear axle from any 4x4 truck from 1986-1995 and any 4runner from 86-89. i'm not positive but i'm sure someone will chime in if i'm wrong.

Ya now I'm completely confused.

Ok, so I am going to take a stab at this:

You have a 1990 4x4 pickup that does not have a rear third member, the removable center section. The truck has an axle housing under it, correct? If this is correct then what you need to do is confirm the front ratio and then look for a third member with a matching ratio. You will be able to use any third from 81-95 that has the matching ratio.

If however your recent purchase does not have a rear axle at all then you will need to find an axle complete with third member from an 86-95 pickup or an 86-early 89 4runners. As was mentioned by the others, the 90-95 4runners had coil springs in the rear and will not swap easily into your pickup.

I think that covers either of your scenarios.

Good luck.

The part I can't figure out is... who sells a truck without a rear third? You can't even move it like that, the SF rear axle needs the third to support the inboard end of the axle shaft.

Very true.

I did! Pulled the 3rds out of my 85 when I retired it. Then sold it to a guy who needed the body. Rolled it onto the trailer, and he brought the housings and rear shafts back once he did the swap.

Sorry for the confusion guys. I forgot to mention on my 1st Post that rear Differential is there only the 3rd member is out. Jinx is right and all of you also . Question again I have. Front fj 80 3rd member is it possible since it also 8"like the rear of 4runner.. Thanks

Uhh... no offense intended, but that didn't really clarify things. The "differential" and "3rd member" is the same exact thing. The differential/3rd is the center part that installs into the axle housing.

This is a differential/3rd member:

Technically, you can put an 80-series front differential in the rear of your truck (which I'm still not clear is a pickup or a 4Runner), it will fit, but it's a bad idea. They are hi-pinion, so driving them in the rear means the pinion will be spinning backwards from normal, which puts all the load on the "coast" side of the gears, and they are not very strong in this orientation. One hard stomp on the gas or climb up a hill and CRUNCH you will chew the teeth off the ring gear. Very expensive fix too.

Ah ok thanks for the info . How about front bumper and grille interchange ? Any idea what year of of 4runner front bumper and grille will fit on my truck. The reason why i ask this question is my front bumper and grille is no in good shape and I couldn't find any at the junkyard. Thanks
